The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is responsible for the safety of 13,500 bridges in the state. According to Ali Karimoddini, Ph.D., associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, each of those bridges, regardless of their condition, is inspected at least once every two years, in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). East Dockery, a senior multimedia journalism student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has been tapped by NBCUniversal to serve as one of 16 traveling interns for the Tokyo Summer Olympics internship program. NBCUniversal also hired 57 at-home interns, overall representing 26 universities. North Carolina A&T is one of several HBCUs represented, including Howard University, and is joined by North Carolina State and Elon University as North Carolina-based campuses.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a three-year $550,000 grant to Narayan Bhattarai, Ph.D., an associate professor of bioengineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, to research metal-composite biomaterial that will significantly reduce the inflammation and scar formation of wounds, leading to more effective healing for patients. This past week, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s Aggie Autonomous Auto (A3) team completed the four-year Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) AutoDrive Challenge in Mcity, Michigan. The University Galleries at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will open its in-person exhibition, “Freedom Ship: The Works of Curtis James” on April 1, 2021 to run until June 30, 2021. The exhibition features 18 works by James that illustrate the 2006 children’s book, “Freedom Ship” by Doreen Rappaport. The story is based on the life of Robert Smalls, an escaped slave who piloted the slave ship, Planter, carrying other escaped slaves to freedom past the confederate battleships in Charleston, South Carolina. The exhibition was made possible through the generous art donation by Texas businessman Arthur Primas, who donated 35 works of art, including works by James and Bryan Collier.

From the corridors of McNair Hall pre-pandemic, to the screens on Zoom, mechanical engineering senior Joshua Burnell is known as a student leader at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University who has strived to positively impact his department, college and university throughout his undergraduate academic career. During the celebration of National Engineers Week at A&T’s College of Engineering (COE), Burnell was selected as the 2021 Namaskar winner for his leadership, professionalism and his level of academic success. COE awards this distinction annually to a graduating senior, highlighting the importance of excellence in engineering and to encourage students to strive for excellence in their endeavors.
