N.C. A&T, Partners to Incorporate Drone Data to Inform and Improve Flood Response

Leila Hashemi Beni, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Built Environment at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, will lead a project to address gaps in flood extent mapping capabilities by incorporating data gathered by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, and implementing deep learning models. She will contribute data science expertise and collaborate with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (SECOORA).

N.C. A&T’s Computational Data Science and Engineering Faculty Member Awarded Second Patent

Hyoshin “John” Park, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Computational and Data Science at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has been awarded his second patent, “System and Method for Predicting Effects of Forward Glance Durations on Latent Hazard Detection.” Recently, Park received his first patent for a cost-effective solution to reduce traffic congestion.

N.C. A&T Research Team Employs Drones to Inspect Bridges in North Carolina

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is responsible for the safety of 13,500 bridges in the state. According to Ali Karimoddini, Ph.D., associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, each of those bridges, regardless of their condition, is inspected at least once every two years, in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). That adds up to a lot of time, personnel and money to ensure the safety of North Carolinians and visitors.

N.C. A&T Joins in $25M NSF Center to Address Phosphorus Sustainability

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has partnered with institutions across the country to establish the $25 million Science and Technology Center for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS) led by N.C. State University and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The center is a renewable project that will bring together multiple disciplines in a “convergence research approach” to address and reduce not only society’s dependence on phosphate mining, but also the actual amount of phosphorus that impacts our soil and water resources.

North Carolina A&T Joins Duke, Other Major Partners, in $20M Artificial Intelligence Center

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is playing a critical role in the creation of Athena, a new artificial intelligence (AI) research center led by Duke University and including Yale, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and other prominent institutional partners. Funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security, Athena is part of a $220 million investment in 11 AI research institutes engaging campuses in 40 states nationwide.

East Dockery, a senior multimedia journalism student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has been tapped by NBCUniversal to serve as one of 16 traveling interns for the Tokyo Summer Olympics internship program. NBCUniversal also hired 57 at-home interns, overall representing 26 universities. North Carolina A&T is one of several HBCUs represented, including Howard University, and is joined by North Carolina State and Elon University as North Carolina-based campuses.

N.C. A&T’s Davis Named a Rhoden Fellow for ESPN’s The Undefeated

Alexis Davis, a senior multimedia journalism student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, was selected to participate in ESPN’s The Undefeated fifth class of Rhoden Fellows along with five peers from historically Black colleges and universities. The fellowship, a year-long sports journalism training program, provides HBCU undergraduate students with opportunities to cover general and sport-related news for their respective campuses. N.C. A&T Bioengineering Researcher Awarded $550K NSF Grant to Develop Biomaterials for Wound-Care Applications

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a three-year $550,000 grant to Narayan Bhattarai, Ph.D., an associate professor of bioengineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, to research metal-composite biomaterial that will significantly reduce the inflammation and scar formation of wounds, leading to more effective healing for patients. Bhattarai is the sole principal investigator on the grant titled, “Biodegradable Composite Nanofiber Meshes that Contain Degradable Metal Particulates.”

This past week, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s Aggie Autonomous Auto (A3) team completed the four-year Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) AutoDrive Challenge in Mcity, Michigan. Throughout the four-year competition, the team converted a standard electric vehicle to level-four autonomy. The team’s success earned N.C. A&T a spot to compete in Phase II of the SAE AutoDrive challenge.

On March 5, the world was reintroduced to Zamunda with the premiere of “Coming 2 America” on Amazon Prime. Fans from all generations gathered together at home to enjoy this anticipated comedy and many were captivated by the fashion and the esthetics of the set that gave us a front-row seat to the continent of Africa. The behind the scenes work that brought these intriguing visuals to life was due to our very own, James “Jimmy” Hawkins, who is a costume designer that worked as a fitter on the set of the movie.

University Galleries to Host In-Person Exhibition, “Freedom Ship: The Works of Curtis James”

The University Galleries at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will open its in-person exhibition, “Freedom Ship: The Works of Curtis James” on April 1, 2021 to run until June 30, 2021. The exhibition features 18 works by James that illustrate the 2006 children’s book, “Freedom Ship” by Doreen Rappaport. The story is based on the life of Robert Smalls, an escaped slave who piloted the slave ship, Planter, carrying other escaped slaves to freedom past the confederate battleships in Charleston, South Carolina. The exhibition was made possible through the generous art donation by Texas businessman Arthur Primas, who donated 35 works of art, including works by James and Bryan Collier.

N.C. A&T Bioengineering Researcher Aims to Develop Mini-brain in Fight against Alzheimer’s Disease

Yeoheung Yun, Ph.D., a bioengineering professor at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, was awarded $1.43 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop a functional mini-brain model in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease (AD). According to the Alzheimer’s Association, AD affects more than 6 million Americans and is the most common cause of dementia.

A&T Alumnus Sanders Selected as Target HBCU Design Challenge Winner

A&T to Receive Five Deep-Cold Storage Freezers for COVID-19 Vaccines

With doses of COVID-19 vaccine now being shipped around the country, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will be well prepared to receive its share, thanks to new deep cold storage units being distributed to 15 campuses of the University of North Carolina System.
