EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 9, 2026) – Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN) will conduct a prostate cancer community rally at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University on Saturday, April 18.

The rally, which is part of PHEN’s Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Strong initiative, will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alumni-Foundation Event Center, 200 N. Benbow Road, Greensboro.

The program will feature educational sessions on the importance of early screening and detection, treatment options once diagnosed, the importance of clinical trials and offer free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) prostate cancer screening blood tests by Labcorp for all men 40 and older, as well as free food.

The rally will take place during the Community Health Fair, which culminates the John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences annual Health and Human Sciences Week. The PHEN HBCU Strong initiative is being brought to campus in partnership with the Center of Excellence for Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research (CIHDER).

“This is a great opportunity to learn more about prostate cancer specifically for African American and Black men,” said Angelo Moore, Ph.D., CIHDER executive director. “We need to take better care of ourselves, so we can be there for our children, grandchildren, and partners.

“Every man can get this free prostate cancer screening, and you do not need to have insurance.  Women, encourage and bring the men in your lives out to this outstanding program.”

PHEN was founded in 2003 by Thomas A. Farrington ‘66, a 26-year prostate cancer survivor and author of “Battling the Killer Within” and “Battling The Killer Within And Winning.” He established the nonprofit after losing his father and both grandfathers to prostate cancer.

“Prostate cancer kills, but you can beat it with early detection screening with a simple blood test,” said Farrington. “I am pleased to bring our rally to Greensboro, a city I came to love as an Aggie student. Brothers, please take advantage of the opportunity to beat a disease that is a crisis within our community.”

PHEN emphasizes the urgent need for community health education, as data show Black men are diagnosed with prostate cancer at a rate nearly 80% higher than white men and die at more than twice the rate.

PHEN provides education and awareness to African American men about prostate cancer, early screening, treatments, clinical trials, statistics, managing survivorship and bone risk. Its mission is to eliminate the African American prostate cancer disparity, and to increase the overall support and resources for a war on prostate cancer.

Additionally, PHEN works with advisory boards, sponsors, partners and volunteers to implement its programs and initiatives, which include Survivor Network, monthly support group meetings, annual summit, online television and videos, symposiums, screenings, and individualized treatment pathway, early educational, clinical trials and church partnership portals. It also provides printed information and webinars that are available to all.
