EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 1, 2025) – In a time-honored academic tradition that dates back to the 12th century, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will officially install James R. Martin II as its 13th chancellor Friday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. in Corbett Sports Center, 405 N. Benbow Road, Greensboro.
Celebratory events and activities associated with the installation are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 11, through Saturday, Sept. 13, for members of the university community as well as guests from across North Carolina and the nation. A full schedule of events, activities, lodging, campus and other details are available on the Installation Website.
Though the installation tradition is centuries old, the North Carolina A&T ceremony will be distinctly future facing under the theme, “Now, Next, and Beyond: Driving Exponential Innovation and Global Impact.” The theme reflects Martin’s bold vision for A&T as a leading land-grant institution committed to 21st century excellence in education, research and service on a global scale.
During the occasion, Martin will be ceremonially endowed with the powers and responsibilities of the office of chief executive. While these duties were officially vested at the time of his appointment by the University of North Carolina System Board of Governors, the ceremony serves as a symbolic and celebratory milestone in the life of the university.
The installation will include remarks from the chair of the A&T Board of Trustees, leadership representatives from the University of North Carolina System, state and municipal officials, members of the academic and professional staff and A&T faculty and students. Musical tributes will honor the university’s rich tradition and culture.
Additional activities for the day include a community reception to be held in the Alumni-Foundation Event Center immediately following the ceremony. Thereafter, the celebration continues with a Global Village Festival in the campus Academic Quad area, from 4 to 7 p.m. Attendees will enjoy a vibrant showcase of cultural diversity reflecting A&T’s commitment to inclusivity across campus and within the broader community. This dynamic event will feature international food tastings, live performances and local vendors with culturally inspired crafts and other products.
The celebration culminates Saturday, Sept. 13, with the 2025 home football opener against rival Hampton University. Fans can enjoy tailgating, the Blue and Gold Marching Machine and an exciting fireworks finale.
Attendees, including members of the media planning to cover the events, are asked to RSVP by Friday, Aug. 15, to the free, official installation ceremony. Visit the Installation Website for complete details and other event specific information.
