Third Semi-annual Back to Basics Conference Strengthens Financial Stewardship

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Sept. 10, 2026) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University reaffirmed its commitment to financial stewardship, compliance and professional development through the successful conclusion of its third semi-annual Back to Basics Conference.

Hosted by the Division of Business and Finance, this two-day event brought together faculty and staff from across the university to strengthen institutional knowledge, reinforce accountability and promote operational excellence.

Since its launch in fall 2025, the conference has served as a cornerstone professional development opportunity for employees responsible for budget management, purchasing, financial operations and administrative functions. Designed to enhance understanding of university policies and procedures, the conference helps ensure consistent practices and responsible stewardship of university resources. 

Led by Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance Virginia Teachey, the conference featured a robust agenda focused on leadership, compliance, financial management and process improvement. Through presentations, panel discussions and networking opportunities, participants gained practical tools and insights to support effective decision-making and strengthen service to the university community. 

Day one opened with welcoming remarks from Thomas Stanley, secretary of the N.C. A&T Board of Trustees, who encouraged attendees to embrace continuous learning and uphold the standards that contribute to the university’s success. The day continued with sessions on auditing, compliance and procurement, including updates on purchasing requirements, delegation thresholds, after-the-fact purchases, independent contractor classifications and sound spending practices

A highlight of the conference was the fireside chat, “Clear, Consistent and Credible Leadership,” where senior university leaders shared perspectives on transparency, accountability and leading through change. Additional sessions focused on workforce management, employee performance, institutional policy updates and mentoring, equipping attendees with strategies to lead and support high-performing teams.

The second day focused on ethics, compliance, budgeting and operational efficiency. Participants engaged in sessions on conflict of interest, FERPA, confidentiality, year-end financial close procedures, spending guidelines by fund source, travel policies and strategies for driving process improvement and organizational effectiveness.

Chancellor James R. Martin II thanked employees for their unwavering dedication to  students and advancing the university’s mission. He emphasized the critical  role faculty and staff play in maintaining A&T’s reputation as a leader in higher education and in upholding its distinction as “the best in the land.”

Attendees were also energized by a surprise performance from the Blue and Gold Marching Machine Cold Steel drumline, which generated excitement for the upcoming 100^th edition of the Greatest Homecoming on Earth. It also served as a powerful reminder of the pride, tradition and excellence that define the Aggie experience.

Special presentations also addressed campus safety and preparations for homecoming.

Throughout the conference, participants engaged in dynamic networking, Q&A sessions, and collaborative discussions aimed at fostering knowledge sharing and strengthening partnerships.

Teachey reinforced the essential role both new and veteran employees play in advancing a culture of accountability, stewardship, customer service and continuous improvement across the institution.

As A&T continues to grow and evolve, initiatives such as the Back to Basics Conference demonstrate the university’s commitment to equipping employees with the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to make informed decisions and effectively manage university resources. The annual event reflects A&T’s dedication to transparency, accountability and best practices, ensuring that employees are well prepared to support student success, academic excellence, operational effectiveness and the university’s long-term strategic goals.
