EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 1, 2026) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s men’s club basketball team is celebrating a dynamic season, having claimed the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) regional championship and advancing to the national tournament in Madison, Wisconsin, where they finished among the top four in the nation.
“To work with these guys since January and win a regional championship and finish top four nationally just shows how much they enjoy the game and the opportunity to compete,” said Jonathan Childress, director of Campus Recreation and coach of the men’s club team. “Today we are regional champions and top four in the nation.”
The championship marks the team’s first regional tournament appearance in at least four years and its first trip to nationals since 2018. The program has a history of national success, previously earning a national championship title.
Unlike intramural sports, North Carolina A&T’s club basketball program travels the country competing against other colleges and universities in tournaments and regional matchups.
The team recently secured the regional title in Maryland, led by a group of skilled upper and lowerclassmen. The roster includes senior leaders and co-captains Cam Johnson and Isaiah Williams, alongside fellow seniors Davin Daniels, Davis Leatherwood and Drew Walker.
The team competed against 24 teams in the NIRSA national tournament, where they were the only historically Black university represented. They finished in the top four with wins against the University of Illinois, Louisiana State University, Texas A&M University and South Dakota University, falling to Utah Valley University in the final four.
The university’s women’s club basketball team also competed at regionals this season, advancing to the quarterfinals while continuing efforts to rebuild a historically successful program.
Looking ahead, Childress hopes to restore both the men’s and women’s club basketball programs to their previous level of prominence by expanding participation and increasing competitive opportunities.
“Our goal is to continue building the program and get it back to where it once was,” he said. “Of course, we want to win a national championship, but more importantly, to provide them with the experience to be able to play after high school, give them the opportunity to stay competitive.”
