EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Dec. 12, 2025) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has been named a 2025 Fulbright Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Institutional Leader.
This is the university’s fourth year being recognized by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). Established by the ECA in December 2019, the Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders initiative recognizes and commends the strong partnership between the Fulbright Program and HBCUs. North Carolina A&T was among the first institutions on the list.
This designation recognizes A&T’s engagement during the 2024-25 academic year with the Fulbright Program, including the university’s support of U.S. and international students, scholars and faculty who benefited from participation in Fulbright opportunities. The university has been involved with the Fulbright Program for 65 years. As a result, many faculty, staff and students have received national distinctions and funding from the Fulbright Program since the early 2010s.
“At North Carolina A&T, we believe in the power of curiosity, collaboration, and global perspective,” said Catherine Edmonds, Ed.D., interim provost and executive vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. “Being named a Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader reflects our commitment to fostering opportunities that connect our campus to the world. Our faculty and students are not only advancing knowledge – they are building bridges, inspiring innovation, and shaping the future for communities everywhere.”
This year, Alsace-Lorraine Gallop, A&T’s National Scholarships and Fellowships coordinator and Fulbright Program advisor, and Tonjia May, director of sponsored programs in the Division of Research and Fulbright Scholar liaison, co-piloted the university’s first Aggie Fulbright Day. Hosted by NCAT Extraordinary Opportunities in the Honors College and the Office of Sponsored Programs, the event was created to showcase more than a decade of momentum in producing students, alumni, faculty and staff selected for Fulbright awards, as well as recent Fulbright Visiting Scholars.
The Fulbright Scholar Program offers more than 400 awards in over 135 countries for U.S. citizens to teach, conduct research and carry out professional projects around the world. In addition to its main Scholar awards, Fulbright provides opportunities such as Postdoctoral Awards and the two-week International Education Administrator Awards.
As the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program, Fulbright has supported more than 400,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists and professionals since its inception in 1946. Participants exchange ideas, build people-to-people connections, and work to address complex global challenges, while a wide range of initiatives ensures the program reflects the diversity of U.S. and global societies.
