EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 23, 2025) – A hands-on results-driven financial aid professional with more than 20 years of progressive experience has been tapped to lead North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s student financial assistance office.
Robert T. Muhammad has been named executive director of N.C. A&T Student Financial Aid and Scholarships, where he will lead a staff of 30 people who make up the office’s management, financial aid advising and processing, scholarship, loan and financial literacy, and client services teams.
“Robert has a track record of success in leading operations both within the financial aid office and throughout the university, training and mentoring financial aid and enrollment management staff, and managing a multimillion-dollar budget,” said Joseph Montgomery, associate vice provost for Enrollment Management. “His experience, along with his ability to establish and maintain rapport with constituents at every level, make him the right person at the right time to lead this office at North Carolina A&T.”
Muhammad joins A&T from Howard University, a private institution that became the first historically Black Research-1 university earlier this year. There, he led a 25-person staff and administered annual financial aid awards totaling $515 million, developed appropriate policies and procedures for various financial aid programs, managed gifts from philanthropists; assisted in developing appropriate awarding philosophies and procedures to keep the institution competitive and ensured the effective and efficient use of automated financial aid management systems, all in accordance with applicable federal regulations, state statutes, and institutional policies and procedures.
Before his five-year tenure at Howard, Muhammad was Winston-Salem State University’s Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid director for nearly a decade. He also served as the University of North Carolina-Charlotte’s Office of Student Financial Aid associate director for more than five years after serving as assistant director three years prior. He began his higher education career at Central Piedmont Community College, first as Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs specialist/coordinator then Upward Bound program coordinator.
Muhammad holds a B.A. in sociology from UNC-Charlotte and MBA from Winston-Salem State. He has served as president of the Tri-State Association of Financial Aid Administrators and the North Carolina Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NCASFAA), and member of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) Thought Force on Under Resourced Schools, NCASFAA’s Legislative Committee. He is a member of the Eastern Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (EASFAA) and NASFAA. News media have cited his expertise on student financial aid and scholarships, as he has coordinated, lectured and presented at many NASFAA, NCASFAA and leadership conferences and workshops.
