N.C. A&T Names Clemson Research Official Vice Chancellor for Research, Economic Development

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Dec. 18, 2019) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has named a Clemson University administrator and researcher its new vice chancellor for Research and Economic Development.

Eric Muth, Ph.D., is associate dean for research and graduate studies and a professor of psychology at Clemson. During his tenure as associate dean, he also served as chair of the university’s Intellectual Property and Conflict of Interest committees.

As a faculty researcher, Muth has published more than 100 scientific papers and articles and earned nearly $8 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Office of Naval Research and other federal agencies and multiple private corporations. During his time at Clemson, the university has grown as a research institution, moving into the top category of national research campuses within the Carnegie Foundation’s university classifications.

Muth also served nearly a decade as the co-owner of Bite Technologies, a university startup company based on technologies he helped invent, which resulted in two patents.

“As a land-grant research university with growing interests in a broad range of scientific areas, we are interested in building on our success over the past few years and moving to a new level of competitiveness and impact,” said Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Beryl McEwen, Ph.D. “Dr. Muth has the experience and vision to help our faculty researchers accelerate our progress toward those goals, and we look forward to his leadership in this key dimension of our university.”  

Muth assumes leadership of a research program that is experiencing significant momentum. For each of the past three fiscal years, it has set institutional records in funding, most recently $64.37 million in fiscal year 2019.

Earlier this year, the university created three new centers of excellence to leverage research strengths in cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing and entrepreneurship. Most recently, the university was announced as the lead institution in a new North Carolina Department of Transportation Center of Excellence in autonomous vehicles.
