N.C. A&T Sophomore Gains Global Perspective Through HBCU Consortium Summer Program

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Aug. 3, 2026) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University sophomore Kamora Gray is using her experience with the HBCU Consortium Summer Program in Barcelona, Spain, to shape her future career in law.

The HBCU Consortium Summer Program offers students from historically Black colleges and universities the opportunity to earn academic credit while studying abroad. In addition to coursework, the program combines cultural activities, local excursions and career development opportunities.

Experiences like Gray’s reflect the North Carolina A&T College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences’ mission to prepare students to become thoughtful leaders, effective communicators and engaged citizens ready to thrive in a global workforce.

“Studying abroad showed me that understanding people is just as important as understanding the law,” said Gray, an honors student on the liberal studies pre-law track. “Every conversation, every cultural difference and every new experience reminded me that empathy and open-mindedness are essential qualities for the type of attorney I hope to become.”

Gray enrolled in Spanish and Fundamentals of Cultural Diversity: Reflections Abroad courses at the Barcelona SAE Academic Center within the School for International Studies (SIS). The coursework complemented the program’s cultural activities and local excursions while reinforcing skills that support effective communication, cultural competency and client advocacy in the legal profession.

Beyond the classroom, she visited La Sagrada Família, which she described as one of the most memorable parts of the experience. She also explored Ibiza and Paris during the program.

Outside of studying abroad, the Baltimore native serves on A&T’s Student Government Association Judicial Council, is second vice president of the NAACP North Carolina Youth & College Division and is a Teach for America Ignite Fellow.

Gray plans to continue preparing for law school with renewed confidence and curiosity. She said her experience abroad has transformed her approach to new opportunities, a mindset she plans to carry throughout the rest of her college career as she works toward becoming an attorney.
