EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Jan. 18, 2023) – NaTasha Yvette Williams, an alumna of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, is a singer and musical theatre actress showcasing her powerful sounds on Broadway in the comedic musical “Some Like It Hot.”
Williams plays Sweet Sue, who leads an all-girl band. The musical is set in Chicago during 1929 when Prohibition has everyone thirsty for a little excitement.
A classic Hollywood film, “Some Like It Hot” has been reimagined and reborn as a Broadway musical comedy. It is the story of two musicians forced to flee the Windy City after witnessing a mob hit. With gangsters hot on their heels, they catch a cross-country train for a life-chasing, life-changing trip.
Williams was attracted to the role of Sweet Sue because of the character’s evolution and courage during Prohibition, believing in her talents enough to quit her job and go on the road to build an all-girl band.
Entertainment Weekly calls “Some Like It Hot” “a booze-soaked boisterous good time from start to finish,” boasting infectious music and lyrics and stellar direction and choreography.
Williams, a 1992 N.C. A&T theatre arts graduate, was awarded the 2021 A&T Alumni Achievement Award from the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. She began singing at 3 in the tiny tot choir at her church and fell in love with performing because she wanted to be on screen and entertain her family and friends. Since then, she has performed from subways to Broadway.
Williams has portrayed Aretha Franklin in “A Night with Janis Joplin,” and has been seen in “Porgy and Bess” and the Broadway musical “The Color Purple.” She previously performed with the Indianapolis Symphony, Naples Philharmonic and Baltimore Symphony orchestras. In 2021, she starred in the Broadway family comedy “Chicken and Biscuits.”
Williams holds a BFA from A&T and an MFA in acting from Michigan State University.
“Some Like It Hot” opened in December 2022 at the Shubert Theatre in New York and runs through September 2023. For more information, visit https://somelikeithotmusical.com/.Media Contact Information: mcrowe@ncat.edu
