EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Sept. 1, 2022) – The University Galleries at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is hosting a new art exhibition, “The Beauty Within: African American Art from the Permanent Collection.” The on-site exhibition features fifteen works from the permanent collection and opens on Sept. 1.

Consisting of art spanning mediums, time periods and cultures, the “Girl Power!” exhibition showcases courage, agency and presence of females in art. Works by noted artists such as Norman Barbee, John Biggers and Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe feature an array of subjects that exude a captivating presence while acknowledging the contributions African American artists have made to the American art landscape.

Highlighted works in the exhibition include “Untitled Landscape” by Harlem Renaissance artist Charles Alston, “Sunday Promenade” by Paris-trained Hale Woodruff and “Glimpse of Jupiter” by Alma Thomas, the first African American woman to have her work in the White House’s permanent art collection.

“This exhibition will show both the diversity in African American art as well as the permanent collection at the University Galleries,” said Paul Baker, Ph.D., director of the University Galleries. “It is essential for museums and galleries to showcase the power and purpose of Black art and material culture.”

The University Galleries are open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday by appointment.  Exhibitions are free and open to the public. Group tours are welcome.

In addition to the onsite location, the University Galleries features virtual exhibitions, which include:
