S.I.S.T.E.R.S
S.I.S.T.E.R.S. (Students Inspiring Success Through Education Retention and Service)is a two-year retention-focused mentoring program within the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) designed to promote overall academic and social development in female students at North Carolina A&T. This program will foster intellectual, personal, and professional growth through the development of positive relationships within the local and campus communities. S.I.S.T.E.R.S. will create a deeper appreciation for excellence in education, service to the community, and finer womanhood.
Program Goals
- Provide awareness of campus educational resources and promote participants’ utilization of all services (i.e., tutorial, supplemental instruction, faculty interaction, etc.).
- Establish positive relationships with peers and faculty through effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication.
- Identify strengths and areas of improvement for personal growth, leadership, and development through self-assessment and mentoring.
- Develop a sense of personal responsibility through systematic decision-making in personal and academic -related issues.
- Enrich the learning experience of all participants, enhance their critical thinking and promote a desire for life-long personal development through servicing our community.
Program Initiatives
- Members will attend monthly meetings/workshops to enhance personal growth and development.
- New Freshmen members will be housed together in the same residence hall for their first year.
- New Freshmen members will also register for the same section of the Freshmen Studies (FRST) College Success course.
- Students will participate in various campus and community events to enrich their college experience.
- Upperclassmen will participate in peer mentoring.
Target Population:
Primarily first-year female students from North Carolina who are entering the university in an undeclared status.
