John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences

Office of the Dean

Welcome to The John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences (HCHHS), the largest and most diverse college on the NC A&T campus. A leader in community engagement, the Hairston college advances NC A&T’s legacy of strategic workforce development and advocacy to enhance community health and wellbeing. We are the proud home to the School of Nursing and six departments: Communications Sciences and Disorders (CSD), Kinesiology, Physician Assistant Studies (PAS), Population Health Management and Policy (PHMP), Psychology (PSYC), and Social Work and Sociology (SW&SO). The Hairston College offers education that fosters success through real-world experiences, allowing students to gain the essential skills and knowledge sought by employers, and prepares them to take their place as leaders in their chosen fields.

The HCHHS offers seven baccalaureate degree programs: a BS in Communication Sciences and Disorders, a BS in Health Services Management, a BS in Kinesiology, a BS in Nursing (BSN), a BA in Psychology, a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), and a BA in Sociology. At the graduate level, HCHHS offers six degree programs, a Masters in Physician Assistant Studies (PA program), a Master of Social Work (MSW), a MS in Health Psychology, a Ph.D. in Social Work, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and a PhD in Applied Psychology. Degree programs in the Hairston College offer numerous educational and career paths. Our graduates become professionals who work to improve their communities and enhance the world we live in. Our ever-growing undergraduate enrollment not only speaks to the popularity of the degree programs that we offer, but to the opportunities that our graduates are prepared to pursue.

Hairston College faculty engage in a variety of research programs, spanning the areas of basic sciences, behavioral sciences, community-based interventions, and clinical/translational research. More importantly, the research programs within the college seek to answer questions that improve overall community health. The Hairston College is also home to the NC regional diabetes research center (NCDRC). Additionally, multiple faculty are supported by external grants from external funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence for Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research (CIHDER), a hub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement efforts to alleviate health disparities and eliminate health inequities. These efforts are achieved via research, community engagement, and training. More importantly, our students are integrated into research experiences that enhance their critical thinking skills and prepare them to work in multidisciplinary team environments

The HCHHS capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between the constituent departments to develop advanced academic programming, enhance the mentoring of trainees, and conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research and scholastic activity. We take pride in being home to three programs that prepare graduates to work in clinical settings as practitioners and leaders as nurses, physician assistants, and social workers.

We continue to build partnerships with regional institutions, community stakeholders, and industry to advance community health and well-being. I invite you to explore our academic programs via the links on our Academic Departments pages and join us in building a legacy of excellence in the health and human sciences.
