In August of 2014, The National Science Foundation awarded North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University with the ADVANCE Institutional Transformation award with the focus on Catalyzing Gender, Leadership & Scholarship Equity through Institutional Change for All. 

The National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE Program strives to increase the participation of women in academic science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers with funding opportunities for individuals and organizations to help pursue these goals. The goals of the ADVANCE program are (1) to develop systemic approaches to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic STEM careers; (2) to develop innovative and sustainable ways to promote gender equity in the STEM academic workforce; and (3) to contribute to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce. The North Carolina A&T State University ADVANCE IT project is a catalyst for university-wide systemic changes that increase the representation of women at all levels. Noting a severe under-representation of women in tenured and tenure-track STEM faculty positions in the university, the NC A&T ADVANCE IT project will work to create an environment conducive to the growth, development, and advancement of all faculty, but particularly women. 


NC A&T ADVANCE IT will focus on three major objectives: 

Objective 1 

Increase recruitment, retention and advancement of women in STEM/SBS at NC A&T by building a strategic pipeline for academic and professional success; 

Objective 2 

Increase opportunities for sustained achievement for all faculty by creating a whole campus culture of excellence in STEM research and scholarship; and 

Objective 3 

Increase the knowledge of roles of gender and gender/race intersectionality within the academy.
