Noble Hall History

The Agricultural and Technical State University, School of Nursing was established in the fall of 1953. At the helm of the reins was Dr. Willetta S. Jones, first dean. The School of Nursing was the first basic collegiate program for Blacks in the state. The college, aware of its responsibility to the people of the community and state, endeavored to build a sound educational program in nursing that would not only merit state and national accreditation, but help meet the needs of society for increased and improved nursing services.

One of the principles upon which the program was built, was that the education of the student within the collegiate setting must provide not only for the scientific and technical needs but also further develop social responsibilities and general cultural attributes.

During the screening process, three hundred applications were reviewed. Forty-eight applicants were accepted and enrolled in the fall semester of 1953. The instructional staff consisted of five nurses holding degrees of higher education.
