Service Charter

The North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University Police Department (N.C. A&T UPD) works each day to foster a safe, engaging, and inclusive campus for all students, faculty, community, and visitors. Our mission is rooted in ethical policing, integrity, and collaboration with a commitment to serving our Aggie family with professionalism and respect.  

We encourage individuals and groups to connect with us and let us know how we can better serve our community. Each member of our department upholds the highest standards of safety, loyalty, and dependability. Through proactive practices and community-oriented policing, we aim to maintain a secure environment where everyone can work, learn, and thrive.  

N.C. A&T UPD are divided into two sections: Patrol Operations and Support Services, which reports to the Deputy Chief of Police. All which work to further advance N.C. A&T UPD and campus life. In addition to their daily operations, our team assists with a variety of other services such as internship programs, building unlocks, safety escorts, welfare checks, vehicle jumps, and much more; these services are provided based on call priority, officer availability, and operational conditions. 

The department has been accredited by CALEA (The Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies) since 2006. The Chief of Police oversees the Professional Standards Division and the Deputy Chief of Police. The Internal Affairs area is responsible for conducting investigations into alleged misconduct within the police department.   

 

Sections

Patrol Operations officers are responsible for daily patrol, K-9 patrol, and investigations. The patrol serves and protects 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

Support Services oversee security, logistics, community affairs, and emergency communications centers to ensure that daily operations align with our department's mission and university goals.

How to Report

Call 911 immediately if there is an immediate threat to life, health, or property, such as severe medical emergencies, crimes in progress, or serious accidents. 

Non-emergency number (336.334.7128) should be use for contact for less urgent matters, this number is intended for situations that do not require an immediate response form emergency service, such as reporting crimes that has already occurred or requesting information about ongoing investigations.

Anonymous tips (336.334.7879) should be reported when there is a concern about criminal activity or wrongdoing that could be investigated by law enforcement. It is important to provide as much detail as possible to assist investigators in their efforts. If the tip is made anonymously, the law enforcement agency will follow a standardized procedure to protect the informant’s identity and ensure the integrity of the legal process.

Additional Services

The University Police Department provides safety escorts to assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors traveling on campus. Safety escorts are intended to enhance personal safety while moving between campus locations, particularly during evening and nighttime hours.

Safety escorts are available upon request and are provided when staffing and operational conditions permit. Escorts are limited to locations on university property and may be conducted on foot or by patrol vehicle, depending on availability and circumstances. This service is not intended to replace emergency response or transportation services.

Requests for safety escorts should be made through University Police Dispatch using the non-emergency number.

University Police officers may assist with jump starts for disabled vehicles located on university property. This service is provided as a courtesy when safe and feasible to do so.

Vehicle assistance is limited to jump starts only. Officers do not perform mechanical repairs, vehicle diagnostics, lockout services, or towing. Assistance is provided at the discretion of the responding officer and is subject to safety considerations, staffing levels, and equipment availability.

Requests for vehicle assistance should be directed to University Police Dispatch using the non-emergency number.

University Police conducts welfare checks when there is concern for the safety or wellbeing of an individual on campus. Welfare checks may be requested by members of the campus community or initiated by officers based on observed circumstances.

During a welfare check, officers assess the situation and take appropriate action based on the information available at the time. This may include verifying an individual’s safety, making notifications, coordinating with appropriate campus or community resources, or providing assistance as circumstances warrant.

In limited situations, officers may provide transportation when necessary to ensure safety and when other appropriate options are unavailable. Any transport is conducted at the officer’s discretion and in accordance with department policy, safety considerations, and operational conditions. Welfare checks are not medical evaluations and do not replace emergency medical services.

Requests should be made through University Police Dispatch.

University Police may provide limited building access assistance for authorized individuals who are locked out of campus facilities. Access is granted only after verification of identity and authorization.

Building access assistance is subject to university policy, security restrictions, and officer availability. Certain areas, including restricted or high-security spaces, may not be eligible for access assistance. After-hours’ access may require additional verification or approval.

Requests for building access assistance should be made through University Police Dispatch using the non-emergency number.

University Police provides copies of incident and crash reports in accordance with North Carolina law and university policy. Reports may be requested by involved parties, authorized representatives, or other individuals as permitted by law.

Requests are subject to review for confidentiality, legal restrictions, and required processing. Certain information may be redacted, and some reports may not be immediately available due to ongoing investigations or statutory requirements.

University Police accepts lost property and assists with the recovery of found items on campus. Items are logged and retained in accordance with department policy and applicable law.
