Simple Syllabus
The What and Why
In December 2025, the UNC System Office released a new regulation regarding syllabi—Regulation on Publication of Academic Calendars, Grading Policies, and Related Materials—which goes into effect January 15, 2026. Under this regulation, syllabi are treated as public record and must be posted on an online, publicly accessible platform.
Simple Syllabus is a centralized, template-driven platform that enables instructors to quickly personalize and publish interactive class syllabi directly in Blackboard, while ensuring that the components required to be publicly available are published automatically.
Faculty can access your syllabi either directly from within Blackboard or from the Simple Syllabus platform.
From within Blackboard:
- Each instructor will need to add the Simple Syllabus tool to their own course menu or to a content area of their choosing. The tool can also be accessed from the Additional Tools or Tools course menu item within each course.
- Please see the recorded how-to video. Passcode: M5&^HrLL
- Once you have clicked on a specific course, you will be able to click the [Simple Syllabus/Named] tab and begin editing your syllabus
From the Simple Syllabus site: https://ncat.simplesyllabus.com/
- Log in using your Institution Credentials.
- Make sure your name is in the top right corner.
- Click the pencil icon to begin editing your syllabus.
- Course name and prefix, along with the course description;
- All goals, objectives, student learning outcomes, and/or student expectations for the course;
- An explanation of how student performance will be assessed, including the grading scale, percentage breakdown of major assignments, and how attendance or participation will affect a student’s final grade;
- List of all course materials (physical and/or electronic) that students are required to purchase; and
- A statement noting that the course engages diverse scholarly perspectives to develop critical thinking, analysis, and debate and inclusion of a reading does not imply endorsement.
- The most recent content will automatically import when editing a syllabus if you have previously submitted a syllabus of the same course.
- The “Would you like to import a different syllabus” feature allows you to access all syllabi that you have published in the past.
- While editing, required components will be outlined in orange and “required” will be visible at the bottom of the component. The component must have content in order for the syllabus to be submitted.
- When you are editing your syllabus, all changes will be automatically saved. The syllabus will not be live until the publishing process is initiated.
- We’ve included help text on the right side of the syllabus to assist you during the editing process or completing a specific component.
