Faculty/Staff Portal

You See Students Every Day. Help Us Reach Them.

Faculty and staff are often the first people students turn to for career advice. We want to make it easy for you to support them — and partner with us to expand career readiness across campus.

💡 Why Career Integration Matters

Students who engage with Career Services before senior year are significantly more likely to secure employment or graduate school admission before graduation.

⚠️ The Challenge

Many students don’t visit Career Services until weeks from graduation — when the strongest opportunities have already closed. Others don’t know we exist, or assume our services are only for certain majors. Faculty referrals are one of the most effective ways to change that.

🚀 The Opportunity

When career readiness is woven into the academic experience, students graduate with more than a degree. They graduate with a plan, a network, and a competitive edge. That’s a win for departments, retention, and institutional reputation.

🤝 Ways to Partner With Career Services

Six ways you can make a direct impact on student career outcomes.

👉 How to Refer Students

A timely referral can be the nudge that changes a student’s entire trajectory.

You don’t need to be a career expert to help. Here’s what to do when a student needs career guidance:

Presentational layout

Step 1: Identify the Need

Student unsure about career direction? Needs resume help? Struggling with job search? Considering grad school? Any of these is a reason to refer.

Step 2: Direct Them to Handshake

Tell the student to log in at ncat.joinhandshake.com with their A&T credentials and book a 30-minute appointment with a career coach. It takes less than 2 minutes.

Step 3: Or Send Them to Walk In

For quick questions or resume reviews, students can walk into Murphy Hall, Suite 101 during office hours (Mon–Fri, 8 AM – 5 PM). No appointment needed.

Step 4: Follow Up

Check back with the student. Ask if they booked their appointment. A gentle follow-up shows you care and increases the chances they’ll actually go.

📊 Departmental Career Outcomes

🏢 Handshake Employer Sign-Up Guide

For faculty and staff who recruit students for labs, departments, or external organizations.

💡 Who is this for? Faculty and staff who need to post job or research positions, internships, work-study roles, or other opportunities for students. This is separate from your student-facing Handshake account — this creates an employer account that lets you post positions and manage applicants.

Step-by-Step: Create Your Employer Account

Presentational layout
1

Go to Handshake

Visit app.joinhandshake.com/employer_registrations/new to begin the employer registration process.

2

Create Your Account

Use your @ncat.edu email address. Enter your name, create a password, and select “Employer” as your account type. If your department is already listed, request to join it. If not, you can create a new employer profile.

3

Complete Your Employer Profile

Add your department or organization name, a brief description of the work your team does, and your logo or department image if available. A complete profile helps students trust the posting.

4

Request Connection to NC A&T

Search for “North Carolina A&T State University” and request to connect. This allows your postings to be visible to A&T students. Career Services will approve your connection request.

5

Post Your Position

Click “Post a Job” and fill in the details: title, description, qualifications, pay/stipend, location, and application deadline. You can target specific majors, class years, and schools.

6

Manage Applicants

Review applications, message candidates, and track your hiring pipeline — all within Handshake. You’ll receive email notifications when students apply.

📌 Types of Positions You Can Post

✅ Research assistant positions
✅ Work-study and student employment
✅ Lab assistants and teaching assistants
✅ Department-specific internships
✅ Summer research fellowships
✅ External opportunities from your professional network

🚨 Need Help?

If you run into any issues during sign-up or need help posting a position, contact Career Services at careerservices@ncat.edu or call 336.334.7755. We’ll walk you through it.

📝 Suggested Syllabus Language

Add a Career Services reference to your syllabus. Copy and adapt the text below.

“The Office of Career Services (Murphy Hall, Suite 101) provides free career coaching, resume and cover letter reviews, mock interviews, job and internship search support, and graduate school planning to all enrolled students. Appointments can be scheduled through Handshake (ncat.joinhandshake.com). Students are encouraged to visit Career Services early and often throughout their academic career.”

💡 Tip: Even a single line in your syllabus normalizes career planning as part of the academic experience. Students are more likely to visit when a trusted professor recommends it.
