Research Interests

Research in the Ongeri lab focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the progression of acute and chronic kidney disease. We work with in vitro cell culture systems, mouse models, and samples from human patients. Of specific interest is determining the role of meprin metalloproteases in the progression of ischemia/reperfusion-induced kidney injury and diabetic kidney disease (DKD). For DKD are we also are interested in understanding the basis for health disparities. To this end we seek to identify biomarkers associated with susceptibility genes. These biomarkers are suited for development of diagnostic tools and tools for evaluating therapeutic outcomes for DKD in susceptible populations such as African Americans and Native Americans.
