Academic Programs & Policies

Graduate study at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is governed by policies established by the University, The Graduate College, and each academic program. Newly admitted graduate students are responsible for understanding and complying with all academic requirements, policies, and expectations as published in the Graduate Catalog and program materials.

Graduate-Level Academic Expectations

Graduate education emphasizes advanced scholarship, independent inquiry, and professional competence. Students are expected to demonstrate academic maturity, integrity, and responsibility consistent with graduate-level study.

Graduate students are held to standards distinct from undergraduate education and are responsible for understanding degree requirements and institutional policies.

Degree Requirements & Program Structure

Each graduate program establishes specific degree requirements approved by the University and published in the Graduate Catalog.

  • Required core and elective coursework
  • Research, thesis, dissertation, or capstone requirements
  • Comprehensive, qualifying, or final examinations
  • Internships, practica, or field experiences where applicable

Students are responsible for completing all degree requirements within established guidelines and deadlines.

Academic Advising

Academic advising is a shared responsibility between the student and the University. Each graduate student is assigned an academic advisor or advising committee.

Students are expected to consult with their advisor prior to course registration and to seek guidance regarding academic progression and degree completion.

Enrollment, Registration & Continuous Enrollment

Graduate students are expected to maintain enrollment in accordance with policies outlined in the Graduate Catalog. Continuous enrollment requirements may apply and vary by program and degree level.

Failure to maintain required enrollment may result in delays in graduation or the need for readmission.

Academic Performance & Good Standing

Graduate students must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress to remain in good academic standing as defined by the Graduate College and the academic program.

Academic performance standards, including progression and grade point average requirements, are published in the Graduate Catalog.

Academic Probation, Suspension & Dismissal

Students who fail to meet established academic standards may be subject to probation, suspension, or dismissal from the academic program.

Policies governing academic action and appeal procedures are outlined in the Graduate Catalog.

Time-to-Degree Requirements

Graduate degrees must be completed within time limits established by the University and the academic program.

Students are responsible for monitoring time-to-degree requirements and requesting extensions or approvals when permitted by policy.

Academic Integrity & Responsible Conduct

Graduate students are expected to uphold the highest standards of academic integrity and ethical conduct in coursework, research, and professional activities.

Violations may result in academic or disciplinary action in accordance with University policies.

Grading Policies
