Bio

Hieu Nguyen is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina A&T State University. Before joining NCAT in 2021, he was a postdoctoral associate at the Center of Energy Economic & Environmental Policies, Rutgers University, New Jersey (2019-2020), at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Utah (2018-2019), and at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Iowa State University (2017-2018). He received his Ph.D. degree from INRS, the University of Quebec in 2017.

Hieu was the recipient of the PERSWADE fellowship from The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the best paper award from the 2016 IEEE International Conference on Sustainable Energy Technologies. He is also a dedicated reviewer for numerous top-tier journals/conferences in the field of power and energy. He received the best reviewer award from IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid in 2018.

Research Interests

Hieu's research focuses on tackling grand challenges in Power Energy Systems and the Internet of Things by using cross-disciplinary methods in engineering, operations research, economics, and control theory. His specific research topics include:
1. Energy & environmental policies for decarbonized grids and transportation electrification (renewable energy certificates, carbon pricing, zero-emission credits) ;
2. Resilience and cyber-security of critical infrastructures (power systems, water, gas network);
3. Network optimization for edge/fog computing, the internet of things, and the metaverse.
4. Power System Control, Operations, and Planning;
5. Renewable energy integration and active distribution network with grid-edge resources

He has published highly cited works in top-tier journals/conferences in the power & energy field (IEEE PES publication and Elsevier), which span broad areas in the power engineering system from hardware implementation & control to energy policy analysis.
