I graduated with a B.S. in Biology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Then I earned my PhD at Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, MD, studying Biochemistry, Cell, and Molecular Biology. I completed two postdoctoral fellowships: 1) researching immune cell signaling at the National Cancer Institute (Bethesda, MD) and 2) studying leukemia at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (Columbus, OH). At OSU, I also taught Introductory Biology and started a service-learning project, the success of which launched me into a career in biology education research. I currently study how community-engaged learning and course-based undergraduate research experiences engage historically underrepresented students in science. I serve as the co-director of the North Carolina Regional Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL) organization that is focused on STEM education and as the faculty advisor for the Minority Association for Premedical Students (MAPS).

Research Interests

Although I trained as a cancer biologist who performed translational research using mouse models of leukemia, I am now a Biology Education Researcher by practice. I study mechanisms for increasing the success and interest of students in learning science. I have an ongoing project studying how community-engaged research and service learning impacts students perceptions of and interest in research. Additionally, I study how the ability to process and understand information on health disparities is improved by student involvement in a service learning project. Additionally, although it is not my primary research area, I have a number of collaborations regarding health disparities in immigrant and refugee communities. My main focus is on the impact that this research experience has on student learning. Finally, I have numerous small projects using case studies to teach students about real-world application of Biology.
