Message From The Chair
Welcome Message from Dr. Deana Lacy McQuitty, CCC-SL
Welcome to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University—where excellence, innovation, and student success are at the heart of everything we do. As Interim Chair and a proud Aggie, it is both an honor and a privilege to lead a department that is deeply committed to preparing the next generation of professionals in Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, and Health Communication Studies. Our undergraduate program offers dynamic, high-impact concentrations that equip students with the academic foundation, clinical exposure, and research experiences needed to thrive in competitive graduate programs and evolving healthcare environments.
At NC A&T, we are unapologetically student-centered. Our faculty are not only experts in their fields but also dedicated mentors who invest in the success of every student. We provide meaningful opportunities for undergraduate research, faculty-student collaboration, and professional development. Through these experiences, our students graduate as confident, culturally responsive, and highly competitive candidates for advanced degrees.
Our department has been strengthened through impactful external funding and innovation. I have had the privilege of leading and contributing to several grant-funded initiatives, including a National Science Foundation (NSF) Build and Broaden Research Award, as well as other externally funded projects that support AI-driven clinical education, global learning, and workforce development. These grants have expanded opportunities for student engagement, faculty research, and interdisciplinary collaboration across our programs.
One of our signature experiences is our “Speech in Belize: Project SHARE” study abroad program. This transformative initiative allows students to engage in culturally responsive service-learning while providing speech-language and health communication support in international communities. Programs like this reflect our commitment to global engagement, experiential learning, and preparing students to serve diverse populations.
Our department fosters a culture of enthusiasm, collaboration, and excellence. We challenge our students to think critically, lead with purpose, and strive for greatness. At the same time, we cultivate an environment where faculty are supported in advancing research, securing funding, and contributing to the field in meaningful ways.
What sets our students and faculty apart is our shared commitment to innovation, equity, and impact. We are not just preparing students for graduate school—we are preparing leaders who will transform the future of communication sciences and disorders.
We are excited to have you join our Aggie family. Here, you will be supported, challenged, and empowered to reach your highest potential.
Aggies Do!
Warm regards,
Dr. Deana Lacy McQuitty, CCC-SLP
