Small-Scale Livestock Production

Small-Scale Livestock Production in North Carolina

North Carolina's agricultural landscape includes a diverse and vibrant small-scale livestock sector that plays a crucial role in the state's economy and in rural communities. These operations are particularly important in supporting rural livelihoods, maintaining agricultural heritage and strengthening local food systems. Many of these farms are family-owned operations and have been passed down through generations, serving as stewards of the land and maintaining the rural character of North Carolina communities.

The small-scale livestock sector encompasses diverse production systems, including beef cattle raised on pasture-based systems, outdoor hog production, small dairy farms, goat and sheep enterprises, backyard poultry flocks, heritage breed conservation efforts, and emerging aquaculture ventures. These operations often serve niche markets, support direct-to-consumer sales, encourage agritourism and develop specialty products, adding value to the agricultural economy beyond traditional commodity production.

However, small-scale livestock producers face unique challenges, including limited access to technical expertise, financial resources, processing facilities and markets. Many producers are beginning farmers. All farmers can benefit from tailored educational programs and support systems to ensure their success and sustainability.

The Livestock Production Extension Program at N.C. A&T State University addresses these challenges by providing comprehensive support to small-scale livestock producers across North Carolina. Our program recognizes the vital role that small-scale livestock production plays in North Carolina's agricultural economy and rural communities, and is committed to ensuring that all small-scale livestock producers have access to the knowledge, tools and support needed to succeed in today’s competitive agricultural marketplace while maintaining environmental stewardship and high animal welfare standards.
