Educational Initiatives
The Center of Excellence in Cybersecurity Research, Education, and Outreach (CREO) is committed to developing the next generation of cybersecurity leaders through integrated education, hands-on training, and workforce development initiatives. CREO aim to ensure that graduates are well-prepared for careers in both the general market and the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) as part of a highly skilled cybersecurity workforce.
CREO has been actively pursuing external funding for workforce development programs that support its signature Earn-As-You-Learn (EAYL) program. Through EAYL, students receive hands-on, practical training while also being financially supported for their work. This model enables students to gain real-world experience in areas such as digital forensics, security operations, and ethical hacking, while developing professional skills that directly translate to the workforce. EAYL reflects CREO’s commitment to bridging education and employment by embedding experiential learning within paid training opportunities.
As part of this broader EAYL strategy, CREO serves as the lead institution for the NKAT-VI Virtual Institute—partnering with Kennesaw State University, Auburn University, and Tuskegee University under VICEROY funding. VICEROY (Virtual Institutes for Cyber and Electromagnetic Spectrum Research and Employ), launched by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering in collaboration with the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Griffiss Institute, is designed to build a mission-ready cybersecurity workforce. Through this program, NC A&T students gain access to foundational training, hands-on experiential learning, and leadership development opportunities aligned with cybersecurity priorities. In addition, CREO’s workforce development approach aligns with broader initiatives such as NC Apprenticeship program, further reinforcing its commitment to scalable, sustainable pathways into cybersecurity careers. Together, these efforts position CREO as a leader in innovative, workforce-driven cybersecurity education.
