2020 Fall Freshmen Innovation Challenge

The College of Engineering is proud to announce the ninth Aggie Freshman Innovation Challenge, which puts "Innovation and Entrepreneurship" into "AggIE" Engineering! This semester sixteen teams will battle in a virtual meeting room for three cash prizes in a showcase of innovation and competition.

The competition will take place Friday, November 20 from 1PM-5PM. The faculty mentors are professors Vernal Alford, Jacqueline Chestnut, Tameka Coley, Mookesh Dhanasar, John Kelly, Vinayak Kabadi and Leotis Parrish.

Meet the Judges

Naathaniel Peachey

Nathaniel Peachey Engineering Manager Qorvo After receiving his PhD in Physical Chemistry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a post-doctoral fellowship at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (Los Alamos, NM), Nathaniel (Nate) joined Atmel Corporation in Colorado Springs as a process engineer in a semiconductor factory in 1996. In 2005, Dr. Peachey joined RFMD as an engineering manager working on ESD-safe I/O design for the company’s varied IC technologies. He continues to hold that position in Qorvo as well as serving as the Vice President for the ESD Association.

Alana Martin is a Senior Manager, HR Business Partner with TE Connectivity’s Industrial and Commercial Transportation business, based in Winston-Salem, NC and a proud life member of the National Society of Black Engineers.  With a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineer and an MBA, Alana’s nearly 20 year career includes roles in Product Development Engineering, Project Management, Product Management with P&L responsibility and Human Resources. In her current role, Alana Partners with the Chief Technical Officer for the business and the Vice President of Product Management to shape talent and organizational decisions.

Charles Hicks Charles is a native of Raleigh, North Carolina and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from NC A&T State University in Greensboro, NC. He is a career corporate IT professional with 25 years of industry experience and currently leads the Americas Customer Assurance Program at NetApp in RTP, NC. Additionally, he serves as global co-chairman for the business resource group, NetApp Network of Blacks in Tech (NNBT), where he helped to launch the program partnering with NetApp’s Global Diversity Inclusion and Belonging and Executive Leadership teams.  Among other initiatives, in collaboration with NNBT, he partnered with STEMentors of Silicon Valley in the 2019 STEMentors Possible Self Expo™ in Sunnyvale, CA where the goal was to “inspire the next generation of innovators in STEAM, through a hands-on exciting and fun experiential”.

Chris Helms works as a software developer at Textron Specialized Vehicles on the Textron Fleet Management system, a connected products solution for managing fleet vehicles. His main responsibilities include research & development of innovative algorithms, like location tracking. Chris also administrates the development workflow in Azure DevOps, like managing build & deployment pipelines.

Magdeldin Hamid joined Capital One in April 2019 where he serves as a Product Manager, leading the enterprise's external file sharing platform. He brings to the challenge 7 years of FinTech experience in product leadership, IT strategy, and risk management. Fun Fact: Mag's professional career includes a diverse range of experiences, from serving tables, to freelance photography, to designing cryptocurrency solutions.

Panashe Mayangamutse Serves on the Advanced Safety User Experience (ASUX) for the Aptiv Business Unit Position. She is the Rear Feature Owner Lead - Algorithm Systems Engineer in the Advanced Safety  & User Experience segment. She leads algorithm development, validation and vehicle level verification of active safety features such as blindspot and rear cross traffic monitoring , lane change warning assist and road profile estimation. Panashe holds a Bachelors’ degree in Electrical Engineering and Minor in Computer Science from Michigan State University and has been with Aptiv for 17 months.

Daffeyo Tubman – "With over 20 years in IT, I have spent my career in Program and Project Management primarily for systems development initiatives and large-scale transformation efforts.  For the last 7 years, I have focused on transformation work involving Agile and Lean, as well as technology transformations. Throughout my career, I have worked in the IT sector of a variety of industries, including auto, financial services, law and commercial real estate."

Juan Vargas-Murillo is a Software Engineer on the Cloud Infrastructure & Operations team based out of Boulder, Colorado. He helps create Observability tools and patterns for internal teams to use to make their service’s more reliable and easier to manage. Some of the technology that he interacts with on a daily basis are: Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Golang, Gitlab, Prometheus, and Jsonnet. Juan graduated from CU Boulder in 2019 with a BS in Computer Science. While in college, he held the position of Student Chapter President of SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) in his Junior year. In his Senior year, Juan attempted to start a startup centered around music recommendation and biometric fitness data. To this day Juan still has a strong interest in AI/ML as well as Entrepreneurship.
