William A. Tucker Scholarship Fund

On Sept. 15, 1998, William A. Tucker celebrated his 70th birthday and his family established the William A. Tucker Scholarship Endowment in honor of his life’s journey and his contributions to his family, community, country and legacy.

Mr. Tucker was born in Greenville, North Carolina, the great-great grandson of Thomas and Henrietta Norris Bell and the fourth child of Robert Tucker and Retha Bell Tucker. He married Helen Hemby and nurtured three daughters, all North Carolina A&T graduates: Demetria (‘72), Cynthia (‘73) and Marcia (‘89) and two sons. The Tuckers have three grandsons and two granddaughters.

Mr. Tucker retired with 26 years of military service in 1974, having served in the United States Navy and Air Force. He is a veteran of World War II, Korean and Vietnam Wars.

After retirement from the military, Mr. Tucker became a longshoreman and, ultimately, was elected president of Newport News Local 846. He retired as a longshoreman in 1994.

Actively involved in civic organizations, Mr. Tucker has served on the Hampton Roads Democratic Party Executive Board, Virginia State Board of Corrections Education Committee, City of Hampton Charter Review Commission, City of Hampton Citizens’ Unity Commission, Committee for the Beautification of the City of Hampton and Hampton Roads Boys and Girls Clubs Board of Directors.

Mr. Tucker received resolutions from the Georgia State Senate, delegates from Hampton and Newport News, and the U.S. Congress on his 70th birthday in honor of his lifelong contributions to his country and community.

William A. Tucker Scholarship Fund Criteria

Scholarships from the William A. Tucker Scholarship Endowment Fund will be awarded to deserving students as determined by the Tucker Family, based on the criteria below.
• Residents of Hampton, Newport News or Tidewater, Virginia
• Students enrolled at N.C. A&T for a minimum of two semesters with a sophomore standing and a minimum GPA of 2.5
• Preference will be given to political science majors with characteristics of service to the community and N.C. A&T
• Financial need and leadership
• Complete a scholarship application process which includes preparing a one-page essay explaining why the student wants to be an educator
