Lee Allen Yates Endowed Scholarship Fund
Lee Allen Yates was born in Halifax County, North Carolina. He received his early education in the public schools of Halifax County where his participation in the 4H program led to a deep appreciation for the value of education. He enrolled at North Carolina A&T College where he earned a Bachelor of Science in agricultural engineering and a Master of Science in industrial education. He later studied at the University of Illinois, Urbana. He retired from N.C. A&T in June 1982 as assistant professor having taught industrial technology, agricultural engineering and earth science.
His other activities included the development of a learning center using computer technology in instruction and the designing and supervision of several farm buildings and research laboratories. The learning center was named in his honor. He served as a member of the university faculty senate, faculty evaluation team and the state task force on rural development.
Lee Yates was the owner and manager of the Lee A. Yates Construction Co. He contracted the design and construction of more than 57 residential and commercial properties in the Greensboro area. Yates was a devoted member of Providence Baptist Church for close to 50 years. He served on the budget, finance and building committees and was also chairman emeritus of the trustee board.
Lee Yates will be remembered for the sterling manner in which he conducted his life. A man of exemplary character, a talent for order, details and unending patience, he was an innovator who embraced new ideas. His friends, who were often motivated through his love and support, will remember his easy smile and pointed humor.
Lee Allen Yates Endowed Scholarship Criteria
Scholarships from the Lee Allan Yates Scholarship Endowment Fund will be awarded to deserving students as determined by the University Scholarship Committee based on the criteria cited below. In making the selection, this committee shall consider such attributes as scholarship, leadership, community service, exceptional talent and financial need. The committee shall give special selection consideration to:
• Students with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and a minimum SAT score of 950
• Students studying agricultural and bio systems engineering
• Incoming freshmen, transfer students and upperclassmen are eligible to apply
