Jennifer Nicole Brown Endowed Scholarship

"I know I can do it," was the determined attitude Jennifer Nicole Brown possessed. She was born March 2, 1970, in Greenville, North Carolina. Jennifer always had a positive attitude and a desire to make a difference in young children’s lives. At an early age, she had a special love for young children and a desire to see them learn. The special love would be the inspiration she needed to begin her career as an educator.

She attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she received a B.A. in English in 1992. Upon completing her undergraduate degree, Jennifer acquired her first teaching position as a teacher’s assistant at Sternberger Elementary School in August 1993. Working as a teacher’s assistant gave her the opportunity to share her love of educating children. After accepting this position, Jennifer quickly decided she would definitely make teaching her profession. She loved it!

She returned to college at North Carolina A&T State University to obtain her teaching certification. While working on her certification, she decided she would continue her education and pursue a master’s degree in elementary education.

At the time of Jennifer’s death Aug. 29, 1996, she had just accepted a full-time teaching position at Laughlin Primary School in Summerfield, North Carolina. She was very excited about this position and was sure she would make a difference in young children's lives.

The Jennifer Nicole Brown Scholarship was established in her loving memory. Her dream was to educate as many young children as possible and make a difference in their lives through education. This scholarship was designed to financially assist those students who are as enthusiastic about education as Jennifer was. It is her family’s hope that this scholarship will help other college students, thus, keeping her dream alive.

The scholarship from the Jennifer Nicole Brown Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded annually to deserving students as determined by the N. C. A&T’s Scholarship Committee based on the criteria below:

• Be a graduate student (Full or Part-time) enrolled in the Master’s Degree program in Elementary Education at N.C. A&T
• Maintain a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average
• Be a resident of the state of North Carolina
• Be enthusiastic about working with young people
• Complete a scholarship application process which includes preparing a one-page essay explaining why they want to be an educator
