Dr. McArthur Newell Endowed Scholarship Fund

Dr. McArthur Newell was born Dec. 29, 1942, in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He attended Georgetown High School in Jacksonville where he was president of the student government and a member of the Crown and Scepter Honor Society. He was valedictorian of the class of 1961 and earned a scholarship to North Carolina A&T State University to further his education. At N.C. A&T, he received a Bachelor of Science and a graduate degree. In pursuing his desire to help others, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, where he earned a medical doctorate degree. Dr. Newell completed his residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia.

Returning his family to North Carolina, he practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Greensboro, North Carolina, for 25 years. Prior to his death, he was delivering second generations. Dr. Newell's memberships included Shiloh Baptist Church, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Greensboro Men's Club, Greensboro Medical Society, North Carolina Medical and National Medical Associations, and the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. He was a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of North Carolina A&T State University. In addition, he served on numerous other boards.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Betty Newell, Helen Brinson and Matthew Hunter. Dr. Newell is survived by his wife, Dottie Ambrose Newell; daughters, Regina N. Stephens, Angela N. Gray, Donna Y. Newell and Pamela N. Williams; sons, McArthur Newell II and Michael Gregory Newell.

Dr. McArthur Newell Endowed Scholarship Criteria

Scholarships from the Dr. McArthur Newell Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to deserving students as determined by the University Scholarship Committee. In making the selection, this committee shall consider such attributes as scholarship, leadership, community service, exceptional talent and financial need. The committee shall give special selection consideration to:
• Students with a minimum GPA of 2.75
• Residents from the State of North Carolina
• Students may be in any academic area
