Summers currently works as an Extension associate in the ANR/CRD unit coordinating the Plasticulture Program (plastic mulch and drip irrigation), as well as on the outreach and research teams for community gardens, high tunnels, compost and alternative agriculture enterprises. Summers is also a board member for the Sustainable Agriculture Program at Central Carolina Community College and is a founding Extension advisor for Feast Down East.

Summers started her career as a research technician in tobacco chemistry at North Carolina State University. She managed the Reid Greenhouse for A&T’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design. Her responsibilities included growing and maintaining plants used in horticulture education classes. Summers also helped teach courses in greenhouse management, greenhouse production and plant propagation and maintained graduate research projects in the greenhouse and at the University Farm. During her tenure as greenhouse manager, Summers also was advisor to the Aggie Horticulture Club, was A&T’s representative on Greensboro Beautiful’s public gardens committee, and was a member of the agricultural societies, Gamma Sigma Delta, Alpha Tau Alpha and the American Society of Horticultural Science.

In 2002, Summers was hired as associate to Cooperative Extension’s horticulture specialist. In this position, she was responsible for establishing and maintaining the horticulture unit at the University Farm. She managed research grants as well as Extension outreach programs for the horticulture unit.
