An advanced degree will allow you to expand your knowledge, stay up-to-date with trends and technology, be more competitive in the job market, and increase your earning potential. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (2013), civil engineers who earned a master’s degree had a 9% higher median wage than those who had a bachelor’s degree. As a student and a graduate, you will be able to make a positive impact on society and the environment through work on clean water, sustainable infrastructure and energy systems, intelligent transportation systems, and environmental remediation. You’ll be introduced to a community of professionals working on the impact of climate change, failing infrastructure, water quality, and alternative energy sources, positioning yourself for a rewarding, profitable career.

According to EMSI, the number of jobs in civil engineering for those with a master’s degree is expected to grow by 5.2% regionally and 3.9% nationally by 2025. As the country’s infrastructure ages, civil engineers will be needed to manage projects to rebuild, repair and upgrade structures of all types. New standards known as the Body of Knowledge are growing in importance within civil engineering, and this is likely to create a greater need for an advanced degree. Therefore, civil engineers with a graduate degree will likely have better prospects.
