Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
1. What is the University Writing Center (UWC)?
It is a place where writers of all types can come and bring their
work to get responses and advice from trained tutors and professionals. If a
student is having trouble with a particular writing assignment, he or she can
bring the material to the center for assistance with accomplishing his/her
writing goals.
2. How does the UWC work?
A student brings a piece of writing that he/she is working on. A
trained tutor or faculty person will consult with the student about what he/she
as well as what the instructor would like the piece of writing to be. He/she
will get advice and recommendations about how to proceed with the assignment so
that the student and instructor will receive the desired work.
3. At what point in the writing process should you
visit the UWC?
You may visit the UWC at any point during the writing process
after you’ve received a writing assignment from an instructor. Remember,
however, that this facility is the UWC. We can help you better if you have put
energy into your writing efforts. Anything you can put down on paper will help
your tutor; even if you’ve just made a few notes, you’ll have something the
tutor can talk with you about. If you are trying to come up with a topic, it
might be a good idea to brainstorm or free write to give you and your tutor a
place of origination.
4. What kinds of things does the UWC help with?
The UWC will assist with any type of writing assignment for any
kind of course. The UWC will help with topic development, organization,
addition, deletion, varying sentence structure, and improving overall writing
style.
5. What kinds of items will the UWC not help with?
The UWC will not write your paper for you. You will be given help and advice, but you must do the writing. The UWC will not simply correct grammar and spelling errors. We are not your proofreaders. The UWC gives response and revision suggestions to writers.
6. How do you contact the UWC and where are you
located?
Students may visit the UWC on their own accord or an
instructor may refer them. Appointments are available. Simply visit us in room
A-309 of the General Classroom Building or online at
http://www.ncat.edu/~uwc. Our phone number is 334-7764. If we are unavailable, please feel free to leave a
message on our voicemail and your call will be returned within 24 business
hours.
7. When is the UWC open?
Usually, our hours of operation vary slightly each semester. Our hours can be found by accessing the
hours tab
on our home page.
