Darlene Foster East, office manager in University Relations at The Garrett House was the widow of Elder George R. East and is survived by her son, Wynn M. East and daughter-in-law Kate East of Tennessee; two grandchildren, Janelle and Ahlivia East, and two sisters and five brothers.

Darlene was born April 25, 1944, in Van Meter, Pennsylvania. She had a love for education and her thirst for knowledge was seen by many educational involvements. While in Pennsylvania, she graduated from Rostraver High School, Duffs Business Institute with honors in 1964, and Allegheny Community College with high honors in 1982, and was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She worked at Westinghouse Electric Corporation, and then progressed from teller at Mellon Bank to bank officer/mortgage lending field manager. She also completed several banking certifications and received numerous achievement, recognition, and bonus awards for sales and services.

Upon moving to Greensboro, she became branch manager of Greensboro National Bank, customer service representative for Norrell Temporary Agency, credit analyst for American Express, SIMS operator/media assistant in Guilford County Schools, and finally administrative office support for North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T). After serving almost ten years as office manager of University Relations (The Garrett House), she had plans to retire April 30. Due to her outstanding job performance and commitment, Darlene became the first recipient of the Employee of the Quarter Award in the Division of Development and University Relations. Her peers elected her to the N.C. A&T Staff Senate.

Darlene promised her husband she would complete her college education and graduated summa cum laude December 2004 from N.C. A&T. She received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, with a concentration in public relations. Her honorary awards and commendations included: Golden Key International Honor Society, Tom Joyner Scholarship, Theta Chapter of Alpha Chi National College Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, All American Scholar, National Dean’s List, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Academic Merit – Department of Speech & Communication, Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, Kappa Tau Alpha, and Cambridge Who’s Who. As a N.C. A&T graduate student, Darlene was an Anna Julia Cooper Scholar in Adult Education. Last week, the School of Graduate Studies inducted her as a 4.0 Scholar for Academic Achievement.
