Mrs. Kay M. Harris

News 14 Video - A&T Remembers Friend and Employee

"The Division of Student Affairs and the entire university community have lost a loyal servant. Mrs. Kay M. Harris, assistant director of counseling services, was injured in an automobile accident on Saturday night, March 21, and later passed at Moses Cone Hospital.

Kay had recently retired from her position and was employed for more than 30 years within the Division of Student Affairs. Her commitment, dedication, love for students, and outgoing personality will be difficult to replace. It is our hope that her family will never forget the importance of her contributions to the university. Let's join together to remember Kay's family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Dr. Sullivan Welborne Jr.
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
North Carolina A&T State University

  • To Kay's Family,
I am saddened by your loss of such a wonderful and caring person. I met Kay when I was Assistant Dean for Nursing at A&T in 1989-1998 and I also worked very closely with her on the project Aggie Cares for hurricane Katrina survivors. Kay counseled many nursing students who she helped tremendously. I will always remember her as a caring, unselfish and compassionate person who would do every thing she could to help students.
Prayers and God's Blessing, Dr. Janice G. Brewington (A&T class of 1970)

Sybil Lynch-Newman

  • Miss Kay is what I knew her best as. She touched my life in such a special way. Had it not been for her tender voice of assurance and sound advice, I may not have found the sense of balance her words seem to inspire to get through a combination of family crisis that threatened to disrupt my peace and productivity during that particular time.
Kay had a calm sense of humor and playfulness, also very memorable, as she would oftentimes send me to greet her peers whenever I wore red as a way to proudly proclaim her allegiance and love for her sorority. Prayers and healing go out to the entire family. I'll truly miss you Miss Kay! Helen Perry
  • It saddened me and my brothers: Bobby & Nobert (Cowboy) Hopkins, to know that an AGGIE is gone. Our hearts cry out to the family, may God Bless the Harris's family. Thank you so much for the 30 years she gave to this University. Eldred Hopkins

  • Kay's smiling face was always there to help us during difficult days. If a crisis happened, Kay and all the counselors were there to provide support for our students. Just working with Kay and her calm demeanor helped keep us focused on our individual roles. Her educational background provided her counseling skills.
But God gave Kay a special gift and a super smile that enabled her to be a bridge over troubled waters. Thanks Kay for allowing God to use you to help all of us. May your same spirit stay with your beautiful family. Mable next door @ Garrett House
  • To the Harris Family; My heart goes out to you during your loss. I remember Mrs. Harris when I started at NC. A&T State University. My cousin's introduced her Mrs. Harris as someone to know on the campus. I often would stop by her office to speak to her just to see the warm smile on her face and the encouragement that she would give me and to tell me how proud she was of me. We would talk about the last time either of us had spoken to my cousins who were like her own children.
Over the years, Mrs. Harris had not changed and was still the caring woman that everyone loved about her. Working on A&T's campus with the Early/Middle College@NC. A&T; I would see Mrs. Harris on campus and I would always stop to greet her with a hug.
Mrs. Harris has helped so many students in her tenure on A&T's campus and as a social worker, I pray that I am making a difference in the lives of others as Mrs. Harris has done. She was a wonderful example of being a humble servant and her legacy will live on through her family and the many students whose lives that she has touched. Duane Lewis

I can attest to her compassion for students. However, we must understand that God has an everlasting place for each of us if we so desire. May her spirits live on in her family, the community, the campus at NC A&T, and the legacy she has left behind through her counseling services to students and others in the profession. • I want to thank God and the Harris family for allowing Mrs Harris to be at A&T State University. I don't know how would have made it through some days with out her solid advice and wisdom. Mrs Harris was a true angel and she will really be missed. I attended A&T from 1981 thru 1986 and she was one of my advisors. She was the type of person that if you needed anything, she was there for you. She was a true blessing to know.
Mrs Harris was a mother to the motherless and she would even be that father for someone that needed a good kick every now and then, but she was the kindest and the sweetest person that you ever know and want to know. God Bless her and Gob bless the Harris family in this unfortunate time. We love you and will be praying for you --- and know this --- with God you will get through this. God Bless you all. This is Donald B. Sellers from Atlanta, Ga, I grew up in Winston Salem and moved to Atlanta after graduation. Donald Sellers

  • Our dedicated and most loyal sister now has the opportunity to rest in her heavenly mansion, in the arms of him who loves her best. Mrs Kay M. Harris lived the life she sang about. Her tune was always refreshing and uplifting. Her lyrics were with grace, peace, and healing. Her melody was soothing to hurting and happy souls. And each beat was with truth. Kay, my college classmate and A&T colleague with whom our childrens activities were often shared in their early years, I will truly miss you as will all others who love and adore you. Alice Monroe

  • Sometimes we just don't have the words to express our grief and sorrow. I felt close t Kay in spirit. She carried a spirit in her that let you know that something was very different about her. I plan to carry that spirit with me forever. In order to understnad her sudden death, I have to believe that God loved her so much that he wanted her with him. That's the only way I can make sense out of my grief. Farewell Angel and we will meet again. Janet Lattimore
  • I am deeply saddened on hearing the news of Mrs. Harris' passing. She was a leader in the college counseling field and in the North Carolina College Counseling Association. Be assured of my prayers for the progress of her beautiful soul and for the friends and family she leaves behind. Linda Baha'i
