2010-2011 Text in Community
The 2010-2011 Text in Community is Rebecca Skloot's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Lacks' roots lay in tobacco farming as a child in Virginia and inner-city Baltimore as an adult, wife and poor mother of five, yet her cells – taken without her knowledge after she died of cancer in 1951 – became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first "immortal" human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today in tens of thousands of research labs and factories around the world. Lacks' cells have aided in medical discoveries from the polio vaccine to AIDS treatments. Yet, today, her family cannot afford the medicines that their mother's cells help to develop. Author Skloot, with the help of Lacks' daughter Deborah, takes the reader on a journey of discovery, uncovering a long-buried story about family, poverty, racism and medical science.
