Peace Corp director to visit campus
Stop by to hear Aaron S. Williams, 18th director of the U.S. Peace Corps, talk about the federal agency Friday, Feb. 19, from 11 a.m. until noon in Webb Hall Auditorium. Williams was nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate last August. The Chicago native served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic, 1967-1970. His career has focused on the development and implementation of human assistance programs throughout Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
Aggies to play WSSU Rams at Greensboro Coliseum
On Monday, Feb. 22, the heated basketball rivalry between North Carolina A&T and Winston-Salem State will be played at the Greensboro Coliseum, which can seat more than 20,000 fans. The women's game begins at 6 p.m., and men's action begins approximately at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com, Ticketmaster outlets and the Coliseum box office, or fans can charge-by-phone at (800) 745-3000. Tickets are $15.00 and all seats are reserved. In addition, the "Family Four Pack" ticket offer (four tickets, four hot dogs and four small drinks for $44), is available in select sections. A&T students and season ticket holders can acquire their tickets at A&T's ticket office.
Chancellor schedules meeting with university administrators
Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. wants to meet with academic and administrative leaders Wednesday, March 3, 3-5 p.m. in Webb Hall Auditorium. Department heads (chairs and directors), assistant and associate deans, assistant and associate vice chancellors, deans and vice chancellors should plan to attend.
Partners in education to host summit
A Summit on College Readiness will be held Wednesday, March 10, in the Joseph S. Koury Hospitality Careers Center located on Guilford Technical Community College's Jamestown campus. UNC President Erskine B. Bowles and John Roueche, professor and director of the Community College Leadership Program and Sid W. Richardson Regents Chair in Community College Leadership at The University of Texas at Austin, are the keynote speakers. The event is sponsored by GTCC, along with Bennett College for Women, Greensboro College, Guilford College, Guilford County Schools, Guilford Education Alliance, North Carolina A&T State University and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Nominations sought for outstanding administrator award
The Committee on Awards and Honorary Degrees is seeking nominations for the Outstanding University Administrator Award. This award recognizes the most outstanding administrator for service to N.C. A&T, and it carries a cash stipend. For details about the criteria, deadline and nomination form, contact the University Studies Office, (336) 285-2059. The recipient will be introduced at the Honors Day Convocation, Tuesday, March 16.
Wanted: Excellent Alumni
The Committee on Awards and Honorary Degrees wants nominations for the 2010 North Carolina A&T State University Alumni Excellence Award. This award is given each year to an alumnus for outstanding contributions to N.C. A&T. Nominations are due Friday, March 12. Zerihun Assefa, associate professor in the department of chemistry, has been awarded a grant of $231,000 from the National Science Foundation's Major Research Instrument Program. The grant will be used for the purchase of single crystal x-ray diffractometer and will strengthen materials research capability of the chemistry department and the university. Seven researchers from chemistry department – Mufeed Basti, Marion Franks, Julius Harp, Debasiah Kuila, Jothi Kumar, Claude Lamb and Alex Williamson – and one from physics – Abebe Kebede – participated in writing the proposal.
Yaohang Li, associate professor in the department of computer science and the department of bioengineering, is gaining recognition for his research in computational biology after receiving the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2009. He was featured in the January 2010 issue of Diverse magazine. In 2005, Li received the "Rookie of the Year" Young Investigator Award at North Carolina A&T and Ralph E. Powe Young Faculty Award in Computer Science and Mathematics from Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).
Wendell F. Phillips, director of state and community relations in the Division of Development and University Relations, has written an article that appears in the March 17, 2010, issue of BlackPressUSA.com. "The Audacity to Adopt," is about the absence of black couples adopting black children in Haiti.
Phil Rubio, university studies assistant professor and author of the award-winning book, A History of Affirmative Action, 1619-2000, has written a book on African American postal workers and their history of labor and social activism. There's Always Work at the Post Office: African American Postal Workers and the Fight for Jobs, Justice, and Equality is scheduled to be published in May by the University of North Carolina Press.
