Blackboard training is designed to provide hands-on experience with using Blackboard as a course management tool.  Blackboard workshops are offered several times throughout the semester. All Spring 2010 sessions will be held in the Center for Distance Learning (1020 Wendover-Suite 202).

Workshop Descriptions

Adding Lectures in Blackboard

This workshop is designed to assist instructors with adding audio and video lectures in Blackboard. Participants will also learn to add audio and video clips to PowerPoint presentations for use as lectures in Blackboard.

Prerequisites: None

Assignment Manager vs. Digital Drop Box

This workshop will provide information on creating assignments using the Assignment Manager, which is a tool for managing assignments in Blackboard. This tool, which is preferred over the Digital Drop Box, allows instructors to create assignments in any content area and post them for students to complete and submit in Blackboard. Creating an assignment using the Assignment Manager automatically creates a listing for the item in the Gradebook, which stores all submitted student assignments. Participants will also learn to download assignments from the Gradebook.

Blackboard Discussion Board

This workshop will provide detailed information on creating discussion forums in Blackboard. The discussion board has several new features and enhancements of old features.

Blogs

This workshop will focus on the use of blogs in web-based courses. Participants will learn how a blog can be a useful tool for assignments, group work tracking, and as a peer review tool. Participants will learn to use the new Learning Objects Journal LX Blog Tool in Blackboard.

Prerequisites: None

Course Tools

This workshop will feature the use of various tools within Blackboard. Topics featured in this session will include creating and managing student groups, using messages vs. email, managing the course calendar, and adding a course glossary. A host of other course tools will be demonstrated.

Prerequisites: None

Creating and Adding Assessments

This workshop will provide detailed information on creating assessments in Blackboard. Instructors have several options for creating assessments, including typing questions in Blackboard, copying and pasting questions, and uploading questions. Assessments can be placed in any content area within Blackboard and can be scored by the Blackboard system.

Prerequisites: None. Participants are encouraged to register for Respondus after completing this session.

Creating and Uploading Podcasts in Blackboard

This hands-on workshop will focus on the creation and production of podcasts. Participants will create an actual podcast that can be used for an online class. The software that will be used is Audacity. This class will cover the production, editing, and uploading of podcasts created during this session.

Prerequisites: This hands-on workshop is designed for participants who have prior experience with Blackboard.

Dreamweaver I - From Dreamweaver to Blackboard: Enhancing Course Content

Interested in sprucing up your content pages beyond the static look Blackboard offers? If so, you may want to come to this dynamic workshop. Participants in this workshop will learn how to use Dreamweaver to create basic web pages for course development. We will also demonstrate how to upload the site to the Blackboard LMS. This training includes the use of tables for site layout, and text and image placement. It also includes a brief overview of basic HTML coding, and its affects on image, text, style and formatting.

Prerequisites: This hands-on workshop is designed for participants who have prior experience with Blackboard.

Elluminate: Getting Started

This workshop will explore the Participant, Chat and Audio Windows, Session Capture (recording), PowerPoint file upload and navigation, the Toolbar, and ways of establishing social presence in Elluminate.

Prerequisites: None

Elluminate: Managing the Breakout Rooms

In this workshop, participants will learn how to set up private and public breakout rooms, distribute participants, manage participants, load content, and monitor breakout room activities.

Prerequisites: None


Elluminate: Managing Session Recording Settings

This workshop will provide detailed information on how to set up Elluminate Live to obtain the desired session recording outcomes.

Prerequisites: None


Elluminate: Polling and Quiz Manager

This workshop will focus on how moderators can keep session participants engaged through simple polls and short quizzes. Participants will learn how to create and manage these assessment tactics in Elluminate Live.

Prerequisites: None


Elluminate: Sharing Multimedia, Web Content, Files, and Applications

This workshop will provide information about using multimedia files, web content, application sharing, and file transfer to enhance Elluminate sessions. Tips on successful content sharing will be discussed.

Prerequisites: None


Elluminate: Using Live Video

This workshop will focus on managing live video broadcasts. Participants will learn how to set video permission, share video snapshots, understand video activity indicators and change preferences for optimum transmission and control.

Elluminate: Using the Whiteboard

This workshop will focus on the use of various whiteboard tools within Elluminate. The whiteboard is the application’s main presentation window. Participants will use it as a work area, learn how to load a presentation, navigate whiteboard screens, set permissions, use screen capture, share images, and manipulate objects and text displays.

Fireworks - Original Instructional Imagery

Looking for an easier way to create custom graphics or edit images for courses that will be uploaded to the web via Blackboard? If the answer is yes, then Fireworks is just the tool to get the job done. Participants in this workshop will learn some basic Fireworks tools that can be used to create custom graphics, edit images, and create slideshows. All of which can be embedded into Blackboard to enhance teaching and learning. If interested in gaining or expanding your knowledge about this user-friendly tool, sign up today.

Introduction to Blackboard - Parts I and II (Condensed)

This condensed version of Introduction to Blackboard Parts I and II will provide information on accessing Blackboard, establishing course settings, managing the course menu, customizing content areas, and creating announcements. Participants will also learn to add content items, graphics, audio clips, and video clips to folders.

Managing the Grade Center

The new Grade Center (formerly called the Gradebook) was completely redesigned to include easier and more efficient navigation with the ability to freeze columns and rows, filter by groups and course sections, and send emails directly from the Grade Center. Faculty can also complete simple calculations, including averages, maximum, minimum, total, and weighting.

Photoshop - Correction Techniques for Enhancing Instructional Imagery

Ever wonder how some images appear to be crystal clear while others extremely distorted and pixilated? Well wonder no more, this workshop is for you! Participants in this workshop will learn how to use Photoshop for basic photo correction and enhancing. Because images are used during face-to-face or online instruction, it is important to understand how to optimize an image for increased clarity and decreased file size. This workshop will demonstrate basic photo editing techniques and tools that aid in improving images. Participants will also learn about image properties and resolution, as it relates to image optimization.

Prerequisites: This hands-on workshop is designed for participants who have prior experience with Blackboard.

Respondus

Respondus is a valuable tool used to create and manage exams that can be published directly to Blackboard. With Respondus, instructors can create exams offline in the familiar Windows environment and import the exams into Blackboard. Respondus also allows instructors to create exams using an exam wizard; add tables, bulleted lists, enhanced formatting, and font changes; embed graphics, audio, and video; use test banks from textbook publishers; and create random sets of questions. Workshop participants will learn to create exams and surveys using Respondus.

Self and Peer Assessment

The Self and Peer Assessment system enables instructors to create assessments that can be formally evaluated by students and their peers. After completing assessments, students use specific criteria to evaluation their own work and the work of their peers. Students can rate certain aspects of the assessment and provide comments for their peers. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn to create and manage self and peer assessments.

StudyMate

StudyMate is a tool that allows instructors to add Flash-based learning activities and games to Blackboard courses. Instructors can enhance interactivity by adding fact cards, flash cards, quiz games, matching games, crosswords, and several other activities to Blackboard courses. Workshop participants will learn to create games and activities, and publish them to Blackboard.

Web 2.0 for Course Development: Where Do I Begin?

Are you interested in Web 2.0 technologies, but are unsure of where to begin? Look no further, we are here to assist you. This workshop will highlight many Web 2.0 technologies that are being used by educators across the country to facilitate and enhance instructional content and delivery. The goal is to build communities of learners that can collaborate and build knowledge in new and interesting ways. If your goal is to better understand how some of these dynamic tools can be integrated into your teaching and learning environment, sign up today.

Wikis

This workshop will focus on the construction of wikis and their use in online courses. This workshop will focus on project development and peer review, group authoring, project tracking, and the distribution of information. Participants will learn to use the new Learning Objects Teams LX Wiki Tool in Blackboard.

All Spring 2010 workshops will be held in the Center for Distance Learning (1020 E. Wendover Avenue - Suite 202). Registration is required due to limited seating.

To register for Blackboard workshops:

  1. Access the NC A&T SU Training Management System: http://www.ncat.edu/training.
  2. Login (top right corner) using your NC A&T email username and password.
  3. Click the Training Schedule link (top of page). Search for the desired workshop.
  4. Click Register beside the desired workshop.

Cancellation Policy

In the case of an emergency (i.e. instructor illness, adverse weather, etc.) and/or workshop cancellation, we will make every effort to contact participants in a timely fashion.

Participants who are unable to attend a workshop, under circumstances other than emergencies and adverse weather, are asked to contact the workshop facilitator at least 24 hours in advance.
