PAL Officers |
A Peer Advisor (PAL) is a person who is in the same environmental circumstances, experiences the same aspirations and pressures and is in the same age range as the person being helped.
A PAL helps directly or indirectly. Direct helping includes such elements as program planning (Orientation), in-group leadership, sharing, framing problems, uncovering alternatives, helping conflict resolutions, reflective listening, etc. Indirect helping takes place outside the formal setting and may occur at any time or place.
A Peer Advisor (PAL) is someone who...
1. Knows about North Carolina A&T State
University
2. Was a freshman once, too
3. Has answers to many questions and
understands why they are asked
4. Understands people and their problems
5. Can help freshmen know other freshmen
6. Is able to relate to others (students,
faculty, staff and administrators)
7. Is interested in sharing the freshman
year experience
8. Likes to be of help in any way
possible
The Role of the Peer Advisor (PAL) is to:
1. Aid new students in adjustment
to college
2. Provide initial and on-going
orientation experience for new students
3. Serve as a source of information to
assist new students with difficulties or questions
4. Serve as a role model for new students
5. Facilitate the interaction of new
students
6. Provide group activities relative to
the most common needs of new students
7. Meet specific needs of new students as
they arise (special skills)
8. Work confidentially with a faculty
advisor in an internship capacity
9. Accept diversity of life styles and
attitudes of a new student
Special Qualifications of a Peer Advisor (PAL) include:
1. Be enrolled as a full-time
student
2. Maintain a 2.8 GPA
3. Not hold other jobs or positions that
demand extensive time
4. Possess a genuine interest in others
and in the philosophy and objective of North Carolina
A&T State
University
5. Be willing to develop the leadership
and interpersonal skills a PAL needs
6. Demonstrate maturity, reliability and
leadership
7. Have ability to relate to others
These qualities are associated with success as a Peer Advisor (PAL).
