    Talent 21 Scholars

       The Talent-21 Scholars Program is designed to increase the number of minority students graduation from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics and who plans to pursue graduate studies in these discipline areas. The program will target students that have demonstrated academic competitiveness and plans to earn a Ph.D. in the science and mathematics areas. The program will also offer faculty researchers awards for faculty who mentor and involve Talent-21 Scholars in their research projects.

The program awards will be distributed across student classifications to attract outstanding students in the entry academic levels and to sustain students in the advanced academic levels. Program components includes:

  • Improved learning in the "gate keeper" courses in calculus, chemistry, and physics 
  • Structured research training experience
  • Enhancement of career competitiveness of minority Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology (SMET) graduates
  • Hands-on experience with new technology and development of basic research skills
  • Improved tutorial services to assist academic development
  • Book scholarships-Research incentive stipends-Independent research achievement stipends
  • Faculty researchers-Student-centered research grants

The Talent-21 Scholars program will award 14 awards for the 1999-2000 academic year.
Student eligibility is based on the following academic criteria:

  • Entering freshman with 3.0 GPA high school
  • Freshmen/sophomores with 3.2 GPA in major and 3.0 overall
  • Juniors/Seniors with 3.5 GPA in major and 3.3 overall

The Talent-21 Scholars Program will awarded annually at the beginning of each semester. The Talent-21 Scholars awards will include three types of awards.
   1.    Support Awards: $1,000 per academic year
   2.    Independent Research Stipends: $500 per academic year
   3.    Incentive Stipends: $200

The awards categories will provide academic year and summer support in the following manner:

                      SUPPORT AWARDS
These awards will assist in the areas of tuition support and book scholarships.   
         INDEPENDENT RESEARCH STIPENDS
These awards will be given to students who present competitive results from their research development in a public forum. 
                     INCENTIVE STIPENDS
These awards will be given each year to encourage student participation in research activities that are currently being done and new areas to be developed under the Talent-21 Program.
