TRADE AND INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION, TEACHING CONCENTRATION GOAL:

The goal of the licensure option of the Trade and Industrial Education concentration is to prepare students to develop cognitive and psychomotor skills in a technical specialization such as construction, drafting, graphics, electronics, manufacturing, or transportation. Students should become Catalysts for Learning. Graduates will be qualified to be licensed in North Carolina to teach trade and industrial education in secondary schools.

The overall goal across all three concentrations is to help students become Catalysts for Learning whether they end up in a career in industry or the public schools. This is the personification of the Conceptual Framework.

Because this is our conceptual framework, students will understand that:

Diversity is an important area for obtaining knowledge, skills, & dispositions. Capitalize on the various backgrounds of students & peers. Address their needs.
Assessment is an important area for obtaining knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Use assessment to improve instruction and foster achievement.
Reflection is an important area for obtaining knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Reflect on teaching and learning in order to improve achievement.
Technology is an important area for obtaining knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Use technology to enhance learning.

Students will understand how to work with parents, families, and the overall community.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

In order to become professional trade and industrial education teachers, who are catalysts for learning, students in the trade and industrial education program will:

  • To develop competencies in communications, sciences, mathematics, and technical specialties.
  • To develop affective and cooperative skills.
  • To provide hands-on experiences with a variety of computer software programs and technological equipment.
  • To develop proficiency in a selected technical specialization from one of the cluster areas.
  • Develop instructional skill and appropriate teaching dispositions (in the context of the specialization) as specified under the INTASC guidelines for beginning teachers and NBPTS for advanced teachers including action research.
  • Understand how to utilize a variety of teaching methods in a variety of laboratory settings as appropriate for the specialty area.
  • Develop skill in the use of instructional technology within the context of the specialty area.
  • Develop an appreciation for the differences in learners and how to address and capitalize on student diversity.
  • Understand how to develop instructional curricula and programs.
  • Learn hands-on experiences with a variety of computer software programs and technological equipment.
  • Understand the impacts, evolution, and social implications of technology.

Products of Teaching Portfolios and the Specific Objectives of the Program
All technology education concentrations in both the BS and MS require a passing Products of Teaching Portfolio in order to graduate.

The Trade and Industrial Education concentration prepares students for teaching certain trade and industrial education courses in the public schools. Trade and industrial education is a specific service area of vocational education that trains public school students for careers in trades like printing, drafting, building trades, and machining. Some majors teach in industry as trainers.
If you have a bachelor's degree and are interested in teaching technology education or vocational education, then the graduate program can help you get your teaching license and your master's degree.

If you are currently teaching technology education or vocational education but are working under a provisional certification or are a "lateral entry" teacher, then the graduate program will help you get that teaching license and a master's degree.

If you have certain work experience and get employed as a Trade and Industrial Education teacher in the public schools, then you may qualify for a lateral or provisional licenses. Visit the important links below to learn more
