Greensboro, NC: A pesticide application and disposal project coordinated by the North Carolina A&T State University Cooperative Extension Program has been awarded funding by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Environmental Intervention Program for Small-Scale and Limited Resource Farmers in North Carolina will receive $232,754 in funding over three years.

The project, led by Mohammed J. Ibrahim and Dr. Daniel M. Lyons of the NC A&T Cooperative Extension Program, will focus on the development and implementation of environmental intervention programs for the state's small-scale farmers.

Key project activities include:

  • identifying compliance assistance needs in the agricultural community, and the most effective ways for small-scale and limited resource farmers to address those needs.
  • providing training and educational materials that will address pesticide management, pollution prevention and general safety.
  • providing demonstrations and hands-on activities for pesticide applicators and their maintenance.
  • establishing a database of limited-resource farmers to target with pertinent pesticide information.

State Agriculture Commissioner Jim Graham, a former member of the A&T Board of Trustees, was on hand to present the grant to A&T during a meeting in the Chancellor's Office.

"The NCDA&CS grant will enable our Cooperative Extension project to aggressively deal with the challenges of environmental safety," said Dr. Edward B. Fort, chancellor of NC A&T. "This is a clear-cut signal that our faculty, staff, scientists and students in the School of Agriculture continue to initiate research efforts, the results of which impact positively upon this state's economic growth and well-being. We are delighted to accept this grant and will push to ensure sound results."

"We need to do everything we can to protect our natural resources and we feel this program helps us achieve that goal," said Graham.

"Providing small-scale farmers with information on the latest and safest ways to apply and dispose of pesticide materials is one way to be proactive in our approach to environmental management."
