Greensboro, NC: Dr. M. R. Reddy was named Outstanding Research Scientist of the Year by the Agricultural Research Program of North Carolina A&T State University. The award was presented during the annual retreat of the A&T Agricultural Research Program.

A tenured professor, Reddy joined the A&T School of Agriculture faculty in 1979.

Reddy's recent research has focused on sustainable agriculture, an area of increasing importance to the state's small-scale farmers and others worried about environmental pollution. On this subject, he leads a project involving researchers from A&T, North Carolina State University, Virginia State University, and producers in both North Carolina and Virginia.

The collaborative effort studies the applicability of sustainable agriculture practices to the production of seedless watermelons and fall lettuce. Sustainable agriculture practices studied in the project include the use of cover crops, crop rotation, no tillage, minimum use of fertilizers and integrated pest management.

At the Eleventh Biennial Research Symposium last fall, Reddy and Dr. Kanglin Li, also of the A&T Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Design, took first place in the Scientist Plant and Soil Science section. Their work, entitled, "In-Situ Measurement of Nitrate Leaching by Tensiometers and Nitrate Electrode," involves an innovative technique to measure the leaching, or seeping through, of nitrates into deep soil and groundwater.

In addition to teaching and research, Reddy has authored and coauthored over 30 papers in professional journals, and presented numerous research papers at national and international conferences.

Reddy received a B.S. from Osmania University in India in 1963, an M.S. from Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University in India in 1965, and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in 1973.
