The grant-funded project: In an attempt to counteract the drop-off in parental involvement as students enter high school, an Action Research Team led at the school by ?? implemented parent information sessions and related activities targeting ninth graders and their parents.
The team offered incentives to help encourage students, parents and teachers to participate in the after-school activities, conducted a parent involvement survey, held various information sessions, and held Switch With A Parent (SWAP) Day to allow parents to experience their children’s school day.
The expected results: The project taught school teachers and administrators that they must strategically plan activities to meet the time constraints of parents, as well as to overcome other challenges parents face including communication and language issues, transportation and child care.
The parent survey revealed that parents are more willing to devote the needed time to school participation when they are invited, notified in advance, involved in the decision-making and informed about the needs of the school. | |
