The school:
Northeast Guilford High School 2005-2006

The grant-funded project:
For this project, A&T English professor Gibreel Kamara hired English teachers to serve as tutors for after-school writing workshops for 10th graders. The goals were to improve students’ writing skills, improve writing test scores and prepare writers to flow into employment at the local daily newspaper. Grant funds were used to pay teachers, purchase teaching supplies and to provide pizza and prizes for participants.

The expected results:
The pre-workshop and post-workshop assessments of students measured their skills before and after the activity. Because many of the students who took part in the workshop first semester didn’t do so during the second semester, and vice versa, the results from the assessments were not conclusive. State scores indicate, however, that the workshops succeeded in improving students’ writing skills.
