The school:
Faulkner Elementary

The grant-funded project:
Stephanie Boykin, a graduate student pursuing a Master of School Administration at A&T, led a team that used PDS funding to purchase research-based student and teacher workbooks, as well as student incentives, to implement an Extended Learner (EL) tutorial program designed to raise and sustain student performance at the school.

The goal of the research was to determine whether an acceleration model such as the EL program provided a viable alternative to remediation models for raising performance in an environment where the majority of new enrollees entering the school were significantly below grade level.

The expected results:
The project offered evidence that elementary students can benefit from an accelerated tutorial model. Fourth-grade participants exhibited significant increases in their math and reading scores, while fifth-grade participants sustained their achievement without any decrease.
