The grant-funded project: An attempt to address the 30 percent proficiency gap between African American male students and white students on standardized tests, William Bryant McIver, II, led this project that implemented a Behavioral Support System mentoring intervention. Targeted were students who previously displayed inappropriate behaviors such as calling out, talking back and walking out of class.
The expected results: The study appears to bear out current research indicating that when students are on task, achievement increases and negative behaviors decrease. Researchers found that the Behavioral Support System did bring about positive changes in student behavior, which translated into improved achievement. | |
