The school:
Alderman Elementary School

The grant-funded project:
Another Principal Fellow and MSA candidate, Shayla Wiggins Savage, used PDS grant funds to implement “Study Island,” an End of Grade test preparation program directly aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, at Alderman. The program allows students to work independently, using technology that sets a prescribed formula for their individual academic needs.

In addition to improving test scores, the program seeks to help students become independent critical thinkers and life-long learners.

The expected results:
Expected results center on improvement in student achievement overall, as well as students with disabilities and limited English proficiency meeting their required targets and the entire school achieving Adequate Yearly Progress.

Also, data generated by the project will include teachers’ rating of students’ self-reliance while solving math problems, which help A&T researchers assess Study Island’s effectiveness.
