Human Resources (Rehabilitation) Counseling
Mission
The Human Resources (Rehabilitation Counseling) program is designed to prepare culturally competent counselors who specialize in working with persons with physical, developmental, cognitive, psychological, and neurological disabilities and/or illness.
Students are equipped with knowledge, skills, and experience to empower persons with disabilities through the counseling process. Students are further equipped with unique skills to provide effective rehabilitation counseling services within a cultural context.
Additionally, this program offers extensive field work, including one practicum and two internship experiences. Each student is placed in a rehabilitation setting successfully completing the 100 hours of Practicum and 600 hours of Internship. The program also offers specialization in Rehabilitation Administration and a Certificate in Rehabilitation Counseling and Behavioral Addictions.
The Human Resources - Rehabilitation Counseling Program has the following objectives:
- To equip students with knowledge, skills, and experiences to empower persons with disabilities through the counseling process
- To increase the student’s knowledge of the role and functions of rehabilitation counselors
- To equip students with unique skills to provide effective rehabilitation counseling services within a cultural context
- To enhance the student's knowledge of the needs and associated resources to meet the evolving needs of persons with disabilities
- To prepare students to obtain professional licensure and certification if the profession of rehabilitation counseling
- To prepare student’s to address professional issues in Rehabilitation Counseling through professional associations, publications, and professional development
- To prepare students to work in a variety of public and private settings in the rehabilitation counseling profession
This program prepares students to become Certified Rehabilitation Counselors (CRC) and apply for licensure as a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the state of North Carolina.
Students in rehabilitation counseling will demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and application in:
- Theories and methods of counseling for individuals with physical or mental disabilities in and out of the work environment
- Case management and documentation requirements meeting federal and state legal guidelines
- Medical aspects associated with physical and mental disability rehabilitation
- Ethical standards with rehabilitation counselors

Internships. Internship can be completed in either one or two semesters. The 600 Internship involves supervised professional experiences in settings appropriate to the student’s vocational objectives. The internships will provide practical work in the student’s area of specialization.
Rehabilitation Counseling and Behavioral Addictions (RCBA) Certification Program
The mission of the Rehabilitation Counseling and Behavioral Addictions (RCBA) certification program is to impart specific knowledge and skills to its students that are required to effectively assist and counsel those who suffer from behavioral addictions (i.e., alcohol and drugs, sexual addiction, eating disorders, criminal behaviors, and gambling). The specific emphasis on ethnic minorities serves to address the unique needs of these individuals, which may be overlooked or misunderstood during the treatment process.

Each of the four courses within this certification program includes content on the 12 core functions of addiction counselors as well as a specific focus on diversity.
