Counseling Program Objectives
The Counseling program housed within the Department of Human Development and Services intends to meet the needs of its students while preparing them to become professional counselors. The School and Agency counseling programs are fully accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Accredited Programs (CACREP) and the Rehabilitation program is fully accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE).
The objectives of the counseling program are to:
1. Present theoretical and practical experiences which prepare graduates to function
effectively as counselors.
2. Encourage the spirit of inquiry and the production and utilization of research among both faculty and students.
3. Produce counselors who use appropriate, culturally sensitive, intervention strategies and skills in working with clients.
4. Foster the development of an awareness and understanding of problems and professional issues as well as the legal and ethical concerns in the counseling profession.
5. Foster the development of the characteristics, personal qualities, and levels of integrity necessary to meet professional standards.
6. Provide opportunities for planned periodic self-evaluation and the development of greater self-understanding as well as the qualities of openness, tolerance, and acceptance of self and others.
7. Develop and provide a multicultural environment that fosters skills necessary for
professional counseling in a diverse society.
Accreditation
North Carolina A&T State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The Counselor Education (school counseling) program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). Program offerings in the area of Counselor Education (school counseling) are designed in compliance with the competencies set forth by the Department of Public Instruction. The Counselor Education (school counseling) program and the Human Resources Community/Agency Counseling program are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The current curriculum in the Human Resources Rehabilitation Counseling program is aligned and accredited with the standards set forth by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE).
Counselor Certification
For applicants who already have a Master of Science degree in Counseling and who wish to obtain State Licensure in school counseling, a second master’s is available. This Master’s is offered in place of certification only.
